Why the Cowboys need a GM

Considering the recent interview/article from MacMahon, many of you out there might be wondering why much of the fandom is asking for a GM to be hired not named Jerry. The real problem in my mind is the conflict of interest. Jerry the owner understandably so is concerned about the business side of things. His decisions are supposed to fuel growth in terms of revenue. The GM of a football team is concerned with making the team better. The problem is, many decisions put the owner and GM at odds. This evidenced by picking up flashy players with little substance. Sure they sale more tickets and merchandise, but they are rarely condusive to winning football games. This is why, despite what Jerry might believe, the Cowboys are at an extreme disadvantage compared to other teams that don't have a meddling owner/GM.

Have no clue why this is even a discussion, as long as Jerry is alive he will be GM, end of story.

Because this is a Cowboys oriented blog where people discuss Cowboy related issues...

Lets be honest Jerry has made some bad decisions as GM, but we do have a very talented group of players. The draft with Wade Phillips killed us, but all the other drafts were quite nice.

Look at teams like the rams, browns, raiders, panthers, Commanders, vikings and chiefs. They all have GMS and we are in a way better position than they are.

Okay, but being better than those teams still means mediocrity. What is your standard for success?

I get that. Completely. But the purpose of this particular thread was to answer the question, should anybody still be asking why a GM separate from the owner is necessary.

To your point about having talented players, talent is not the only thing you look for. Talent without focus, accountability and discipline is worthless. Which brings me to the other issue with having Jerry as the GM. Granted, this is conjecture, but I believe the reason we have a lack of focus, discipline and accountability is because Jerry does not allow Jason to create that type of environment. After the second incident of Dez Bryant attempting to field a punt from over-his-shoulders, he should have been put on the bench for the rest of the game. Period. The problem is, I don't believe Jerry would actually allow Jason to do that. Again, this is just my belief. Obviously, I can't prove it. But I do believe the proof, so-to-speak, is in the pudding.

As far as how I feel about it, I could care less either way. Like Jerry said, it's his team and he can run it how he likes. It sucks, but life goes on.

Except for the Browns and Chiefs, all of those teams listed have more playoff victories than we do in the last decade and a half and three of them have been to Superbowls over that period. Although the above mentioned teams are currently under-performing, they can actually remedy the situation in the future by bringing in new management, something that will not happen in Dallas.
