...The Cowboys brass will have several big decisions to make in the new year. One of the first being which of their various free agents they’ll need to re-sign. Earlier this year, Dallas elected to allow a majority of their defensive secondary to leave via free agency. Names like safety Barry Church and starting cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne have all found success elsewhere in 2017...

This upcoming offseason, similar decisions will have to be made concerning veterans like defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who currently leads the NFL with 13.5 sacks. Other players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents include offensive guard Jonathan Cooper, wide receiver Brice Butler and linebacker Kyle Wilber.

Defensive tackle David Irving will be a restricted free agent. While an extension for All-Pro right guard Zack Martin is also expected to happen next year.

Although names like Lawrence, Irving and Martin are all expected to be retained, I’d like to add another upcoming free agent to that list for Dallas: Linebacker Anthony Hitchens. The former fourth rounder out of Iowa might be deemed expendable with the expected rise of Jaylon Smith. But I believe it’s important that the Cowboys keep their trio of talented linebackers together...

Agreed, but finishing off a consistently top shelf team is that important for all score cards, now...to a LOT of ink!

Hitchens is a must sign unless he wants a big deal. If Zach Brown can come off a pro bowl year and get a 2.5 mil deal then hitchens better come correct or he can go.

Hitchens has more than earned a legitimate shot, and not based upon pure starting pedigree.

He has earned only a deal similar to his market value. He better hope the going rate for starting mlbs has gone up since last year

I agree Hitchens has been our go to utility guy on all things LB related being he can play all positions, I just have a sneaky feeling we may lowball him if Jaylon finishes strong. I mean sure the staff here wants him, but how much do you throw out there knowing we are looking for possibly 2 more quality LB's and resign so many other higher salary positions? I hope I am wrong, just really have a concern we get outbid for his services.

Ummm, at this point I'm still considering anything we get out of Jaylon to be a bonus but not someone we can count on to become a star and maybe not even to Hitchs level.
I still see that we need to resign Hitch and look for another playmaker at LB, or two. Losing Hitch IMO loses one half of the competent LB corps we have. I'd put resigning Hitch behind only DLaw and Martin....maybe Cooper....

Sean Lee won't be around forever and is injury prone. We either must keep Hitch or draft a stud.

Hopefully teams aren't sold on Cooper and we're able to keep him at a good price.

Other teams' FO's might look at his history and sort of attribute 2017 to playing in between 2 of the best in the league.

I'd expect Hutchins to test the market for a big-money deal, and then,if he doesn't get one (based on his own injury history), return to the Cowboys on a one year deal to improve his stock for 2019.

Hitchens isn't a bad player. Shouldn't overpay though. He gets dinged up a lot
