- They are the closest division rival behind the Cowboys. At 4-5, they're technically just one game behind Dallas, although the Cowboys retain the head-to-head tiebreaker for the time being.
- They have the easiest remaining schedule of any NFC East team, Cowboys included. The Cowboys' remaining schedule includes games against the 6-2 Saints, 4-3 Bears, 5-2 Packers and three division games. The Commanders' remaining schedule includes games against the undefeated Chiefs, 6-2 Niners, and four division games. The Giants' remaining schedule includes games against the Packers, 8-1 Seahawks, Lions, and three division games. The Eagles? Their toughest remaining games are against the Packers, Lions and Bears - two of those at home - and they also only play two more division games.
- They have the best division record apart from the Cowboys. The Cowboys are an undefeated 3-0 in the NFC East. The Eagles are 2-2 in the NFC East. The Giants and Commanders are 1-2 and 0-2 in the division, respectively. From a tiebreaker perspective, it is very important for the Cowboys that the Eagles lose at least one more division game prior to that Week 17 Cowboys-Eagles showdown.
So, what should we root for?
We want the Giants and Commanders to split their season series. This would give them 3 division losses apiece and guarantee that they would lose to Dallas on any tiebreaker (if the Cowboys win just one more division games.)
We want the Commanders to beat the Eagles. This would give the Eagles their 3rd division loss and guarantee that the Eagles could not possibly prevail against the Cowboys on the basis of a division-record tiebreaker.
Because the Cowboys are already 3-0 in the NFC East and the Eagles, Giants and Commanders all have 2 losses apiece already, one more Cowboys division win combined by one more division loss for the Eagles, Giants and Commanders apiece would guarantee that the Cowboys would prevail over every team in the NFC East on tiebreakers (4-2 or better for Dallas vs. 3-3 or worse for all three other teams.)
