Why Tony Romo chose to make his Arts-and-Craftsy DirecTV persona a little creepier

“It was great,” Romo said during the Around the NFL podcast. “It was definitely a unique experience. I hadn’t sat in a makeup chair for four hours before. It was a little different.
“They had the plan for the situation and obviously I agreed to it. But when I was in there, though, they had a certain, they wanted me to be just a little bit less than what you saw, but I ended up feeling as though this guy like lived by himself and he doesn’t interact with human beings very often and I felt like, ‘OK, there’s this camera crew in this guy’s house and now he’s really excited, but he’s a little weirded-out by everybody.’
“It just kind of felt that way when I was on set, so I just took on that role a little bit. It kind of made it into what it is and Arts-and-Craftsy became a little paranoid Arts-and-Craftsy. It was pretty good.”
Romo was then asked about going full method actor like Robert De Niro.
“Yeah, exactly. I’m just like Robert De Niro,” Romo said. “I’m sure my Academy Awards are right around the corner here any time now.”

I've yet to see that on real TV, but I've seen the Eli Manning one a million times.

Romo's will kick in when preseason games start.
Definitely the better of the two

I actually like Eli's better. Not that Eli is any better, but I like the alternate character better. I haven't seen Luck's.

One thing is for sure, Romo has a world of opportunities awaiting when he retires from football. He has that personality that will allow him into the booth or coaching. Personally, I want to see him go in commentating whether it be play-by-play or analyst.

The more I think about it.....I would retire for good and travel the world playing golf with the family

Romo's is better than Eli's or Luck's.

Eli has mushmouth. He just sounds like he needs diction class.

Luck barely got into character. It was just him with cats.
I haven't seen Luck. He has a DrecTv persona commercial?

By far the best television ad I ever saw Eli Manning in was a Citizens watch commercial where he was passing the ball in slo-mo.

Yes. I'm serious.

The thing about Romo 's bit is that it really is creepy more than haha funny. Which in my opinion makes it great - dark humor. He also has the lines that I think will become more catchphrase-y, like "crownies". I think we'll hear that a lot on highlight shows.

The game broadcast announcers will use it for sure. "Tony just put a crownie on that drive with a TD pass to Dez Bryant."
