Why We Will Take Cam Newton if He's there at #9

Romo is getting up there in age and other than putting up pretty #'s, we've won 1 playoff game in five years with him as our field general.

I think there's an elephant in the proverbial room when it comes to Romo. He's just good enough to warrant keeping around but for whatever reason he seems unable to get over the hump to make us elite and regular contenders.

With Michael Vick's passing game evolving and catching up with his rushing game, the Eagles showed what the new face of an NFL QB is likely to become. We even saw Aaron Rodgers tuck the ball and run this season, seemingly by design, including several times throughout the playoffs.

Newton is an intriguing player.

He passed for over 2800 yards, with 30 TDs to only 7 INTs while maintaining a 66 percent completion percentage.

Those are top-of-the-heap stats for a college football QB playing in a major conference.

Now keep in mind that he did all of this while also rushing for nearly 1500 yards and 20 TDs. That is staggering.

We've heard plenty of talk about the Cam/Cowboys connection. And we know that we scheduled a meeting with him.

We also know that Jerry likes to put butts in seats and sell Jerseys. Imagine what kind of revenue a high profile QB like Newton would generate in the DFW area.

Jerry's no dummy. He knows that you have to have a QB to win these days and he's not going to keep Romo around much longer without any insurance. Newton is that insurance. He can sit behind Romo and learn the playbook for a season or two, worst case scenario would be Romo takes us deep in the playoffs and shows that he's capable of bringing the championship home and we could trade Newton for decent compensation. It's not like this team has so many holes that missing out on an OL or DB in the first would set us back that far.

Jerry also knows that we're not bad enough to be in the running for Andrew Luck in 2012. That's why I think that if Newton falls to us, he's going to be too tempting of a pick to skip out on but I don't think he's so tempting that Jerry would make a hasty trade to move up for him. And on top of that, we could end up kicking ourselves if we pass on him and the Commanders take him with the very next pick.

We have one of the top 6 QB's in name recognition, (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, Ben Roethlishberger). Newton is not even close.

I like Newton. I think he will be a great NFL QB. Just not sure I like him enough to use #9 on him. I just don't know. We'll see what happens.

I agree that we wont go after Cam, but name recognition is a ridiculous argument.

I think he will be an excellent QB also... I think the choice won't even be there to be made...but if it was...Unless they have some kinda deal in place to trade Romo it would be a disaster waiting to happen especially with the amount of negative press Dallas always gets

If Newton falls to 9...Dallas should have a number of teams calling and willing to trade. We sit back and decide which is the best offer to take if no other player is there that they really love.

The OP assumes several things here:

1) the obvious--that we would actually burn a top 10 pick on a QB right now.
2) that we even rate Newton high enough to blow a top ten pick on him
3) that we would not fleece someone in love with newton ina trade at #9.

Just a note: Both Mike Mayock and Charlie Casserly do not rate Newton as even a top 20 player, let alone top 10.
In fact Casserly does not even rank him as a 1st rounder.
However, there are so many teams in need of a QB, someone will overpay for him.....not us.

Just because mock draft and suppossedly a few other teams like Newton, does not mean we do.

In the end, I give this OP a D- or F. :)

It was in the OP's post, and I pointed out its ridiculous to say Cam has more name recognition that Romo.

so many glaring needs and we use our top 10 first round pick on a QB with questionable character issues, and suspect accuracy?
I'll be the first guy to tell you I'd like to see us start looking for Romo's replacement. I wouldn't mind drafting Cam Newton and developing him.
But with our 1st round pick??? hell no. wouldn't even consider it. I'd field trade offers or just select BPA, who in my opinion would not be Cam.
If romo was in his late 30's i'd consider it, but we're not at that point yet, and there will be other QB's either in this draft or in the coming years, that will be available as projects to eventually replace romo. can't let the draft hype convince you to make poor decisions that will effect the team for years to come.

I don't see Dallas taking Newton and if he is there at 9 I would expect there will be good offers of teams wanting to move into that spot. As for Newton I can't say I'm sold on him, hard to get excited about a kid who posted 1 season in college football.

Please edit your post to say April's Fools at the end to regain some credibility.

There is only 1 QB I would have given serious thought to this year had he entered the draft and that is Andrew Luck

Ditto and there was no way we would have the ammo to move up and get him.

Someone is going to be a happy camper to get that kid next year.

I agree. Who ever has the 1st overall next season will end up with a top franchise QB.

I am not even close to being convinced that Newton will be a top 10 pick. Nothing that I have seen from him suggests to me that his skill set translates well into the NFL. He's not a Pro passer, he's not a guy who understands how to play from under the Center, he's not a guy who has shown what could be described as average mechanics, he has questions about his past and there are questions about his ability to lead.

I honestly don't know why people have him ranked in the top 10. I could be entirely wrong here but I don't see it.

Apart of me wants Dallas to stay away from Newton and just get Romo back to where he should be. But there is something unsettling about Romo...and I cant really put my finger on it. And that fact that Newton is huge QB who is very difficult to bring down. Dan Reeves recently stated that Newton reminds him of Vick with a better arm. You have to listen when someone with Reeves background says something like that.
