Why would ESPN pay Witten 4 million?

One other thing I forgot to point out about Witten is he’s well spoken. You can tell listening to him he’s a good talker who can talk football.

Never mind what Cowboys Nation thinks of Jason Witten; he’s one of the most respected players in the league, by both opponents and their fans.

Honesty, loyalty, integrity, guts.

You can bet that Witten won’t throw compliments at players for simply doing their jobs — and he absolutely WILL NOT rationalize or sugarcoat bad football.

I'll take the job for a lot less if Witten doesn't......I'm waiting by the phone for that call, I suspect I'll be waiting a long while though!!!!!

And yet they pay the commentators between 500K to 2 million.

ESPN makes money from their contract with the cable companies. They are like CNN in the respect they don't live off of ratings as much as non-cable shows. If your wife is the one who buys the cable and she does so so she can watch the Hallmark channel, in most basic packages you get ESPN. They negotiated the top dollar contract long ago. So they will have the money guaranteed, and can pay Witten whatever.

Just makes me wonder about morale when a new guy is making twice what the vested crew makes on his first day at work.

Seems like a lot of money for that job..guess I'm out of the loop on that salary structure. I thought I read Troy 500k starting out

That was like almost 20 years ago. Different time in media driven world where TV and radio are not the only medium available.

Because that's the going rate and Gruden had worked his deal up to 6.5M. Do we know what the #1's Aikman and Romo are making? There is a certain prestige to the position and with that comes the coin.

I think the reason Witten was targeted was because they're hoping to strike a gusher twice. No broadcaster has ever made the impression Romo made last season and even Cowboys haters were singing his praise and how much they liked him doing the games. As far as Witten being vanilla, who knows? Aikman and Romo were vanilla to the media. However, Simms was vanilla everywhere. His claim to fame was ironing his shirts in his hotel room and not only admitted that but had that stupid iron to combat Madden's 6 legged turkey as a prize. Simms is so boring he texts his wife groans and moans after the fact.

According to this article another network has made Witten an offer? Could it be NBC Sunday Night Football? Interesting story.
Tony Romo, still making Witten big money.

Networks are trying to copycat the Tony Romo broadcast success. A fad this year. I don't expect it to continue. Witten should jump on the chances available this year.

Why would you assume NBC, they're doing better than the others in the ratings. Personally, Witten would not be an upgrade over Collinsworth for me, he does his homework and I think he does a good job.

I would think it might be CBS because Romo might have used a little influence there. I could pick 4 spots he could do on the CBS pregame, the lamest pregame in NFL history. I think they should kick Simms out and put in Witten just to have the Giant borenerd replaced again by a Cowboy. That had to hurt, Romo getting all that praise after replacing him.

Witten not as much of a wordsmith as some people may think..But he turns all the stiles at HOF football is life, interesting take color guy..At least outside looking in..That and Espn needs ratings. They seem to be experiencing some ratings drop coz watered down, over saturated market..
