Wide Receiver Blocking

What do you guys think? With the success we had on screens, do you think this is something Garrett is more focused on? I know it was something we focused on a lot more during the early 90s. Since Garrett was around then, I'm wondering if he's making the prima donnas do any of the dirty work.

I also know it was something Parcells focused on heavily. Then I never really saw it with Wade's teams.... That's something I hope to see more of in the up and coming game.

Austin alluded to the blocking work they're doing this week in order to support the running game. I think it's something they definitely are emphasizing (along with stripping on defense).

Wade's teams always did a good job of blocking downfield. It certainly wasn't something he neglected. I am curious to see, though, if Jason's going to make it a much bigger part of each play. We've got the WRs to be the best blocking set of skill players in the league if we want to.

Ya. I keep all kinds of late hours. You wouldn't believe what I do this late if I told you. And you wouldn't believe what time I actually have to be up in the morning. Funny thing is, I need to sleep now but I'm drinking my fourth cup of coffee. That's how I am.

As far as Just Dez it, I agree. But we can't get too one-dimensional or they'll shut down that pass. I know Dez has the ability to block just by looking at him. Shoot, I'd say our best area of blocking is the wide receivers. We just haven't used them.

I'm not saying we run these plays all of the time.

But imagine if we ran the old high school, college play--the corner back crack. Where the WR heads straight for the middle linebacker who would be on the running back sweeping outside. His goal is to blindside the linebacker who shouldn't even see it coming because he's looking at the RB.

Meanwhile, the FB is honed in on the corner who is hopefully trying to cover the slant or at least was once heading that way. Then the fullback takes out the CB and the slot goes upfield to block the safety.

This play works a lot on the lower level. I'd like to see more sophisticated versions of use doing this.

I bet Dez could really lay someone out. My nick for him is the Billdezzer (if you've ever watched King of the Hill.)

That's what I'm saying. Schematically, the offense could do a lot more if they incorporated more plays that hinged on WR blocks. Like you said, we have the guys to do it. That's what got me thinking about the idea of actually trying to implement more of it.... not trying to reinvent the wheel. Just throwing up ideas for how to execute more successful schemes.

Our WRs tower over most DBs from a size and strength standpoint.

For all his warts, Roy Williams is a very good blocker and an asset in that aspect.

I thought Roy did a pretty good job blocking last year and Miles has always been pretty good since he's a physical and willing WR. The screen play worked because Felix executed it very well. It's something we're seeing more teams in the league do...they'll have a RB line up to the right side and then the RB will run up towards the LOS and then run along the LOS, hoping to get lost in the shuffle. Not easy to do with all that traffic in there, but Felix did it well there.

Did you see Kosier's effort on that Felix screen? I love Kosier, but he should have been benched after that play.

Good point, Realtick...and topic was relevant. I like the dimension that getting the ball outside the line of scrimmage does. It creates a whole different dimension of size overload given the size of the Dallas receiver group and them being able to dominate a secondary when blocking. Good stuff to add. It gives a whole arena of problems to opposing linebackers, getting matched up against tight ends that can haul, and having to manuever about receivers that match or exceed in heights as well. This gives potential to the long plays that Kitna took advantage of against the Giants, who have good linebackers and secondary.

Roy has been a very good downfield blocker since he has been here. I've seen Dez do some blocking since he got here. Austin has flashed some blocking in the past as well. I don't know if Garrett is emphasizing it more, but I never saw that as a problem area to begin with.

Sherman has always emphasized that; that is where it comes from. The fact that we have WRs that are willing and able to do it is another plus.

Our WRs have generally blocked well on screens. The problem has been our O-Linemen never got out there to make that first block that gives the back a chance to make something happen. Even on Felix's TD the O-Line blocking out there was in no way great, but it was at least good enough that he could slip through which is all that matters.

That's a cool clip. I wasn't watching a lot of Dallas media because of their website issues. The way Miles Austin talks you can tell he's a winner and a good attitude guy.

Our duo of Dez and Miles is like having T.O. and Moss without the attitude.

Now if we can just show something on the field.

I dont know if he will focus on it. Its a tough way to make a living if thats your bread and butter on offense. I think he will use it at will when he deems it a good call. But I dont think he will focus on any one play. I think the new mantra is diversity and confusion. Quit being predictable.

Eh, didn't mean to use focus on it as in a focal point of what the offense does. I just mean that there should be a few plays designed where the WRs are able to make blocks for Felix and the other playmakers downfield.

I guess I'm just talking about fundamentals and not quitting. But schematically you could incorporate plays that put emphasis on getting guys to the second tier, beating them and letting the WRs clear the way for back or WR (not that we don't do this already).

Don't get me wrong. I like seeing Dez go downfield as much as the next guy. I honestly can't comment one way or another on his blocking other than I know he can block well if he tried. And I'm sure he will. But having the whole package in these WRs we have is important, I think.

Talent is one thing. Attitude is another. I liked what I heard from Miles in that ciip from Idgit. So it makes me a happy fan to know he can go 99, or he's been practicing he's blocking too.

That's all I'm saying, really. But I think Garrett will put it all into play so they understand why they're practicing it.
