Everyone is talking about whether or not Dez Bryant is as good as Calvin Johnson (we see that he is on pace to outmatch his numbers), but the comparison that is more interesting to me is whether or not Cole Beasley can become a player superior to Wes Welker.

I've been beating the drums for Cole Beasley since he first got here, before and after he quit. That whole thing was a non-starter to me.

I see the things Beasley is doing, and slowly but surely he is becoming a much more complete player. He worked out extremely hard in the weight room this offseason, and I'm sure with Woicik he can do more again next offseason.

The only thing I can see holding Beasley back is his role in our offense compared to Welkers in New England or Denver. I really hope we see him on the field at least 75-80 percent of the time going forward. We need to feed this guy the ball, and I guarantee you he will move the chains and help us score more efficiently. I would say that he is more like the NFL equivalent to a lead hitter in baseball. He might not be our best option in the redzone, but he can help get us there consistently and constantly. He catches everything, has the ability to run great routes and get separation, and then he has the will and determination to get that yardage after the catch.

I think he is easily the most underrated player on our roster, but I'm glad others are start to pay attention to him. I think a lot of people knew how angry I was when Garrett put egg on my face by not starting him the first two games of the season, but I think Beasley has shown where he belongs. In the last 3 games he has gotten at least 40 yards in each game. His targets have gone up in each game as well.

I'm about to commit blatant blasphemy here and state that if the evolution of Williams and Beasley continues, the offense will have little need for more than a novel running game. Not my particular idea for the offense, but it will be very difficult to pull back on the passing game if it proliferates down the stretch. Dallas already has a sometimes perverse predilection for the passing game as it is. The Cowboys "seem" to be on the uptick ... both sides of the ball, but line play will have a lot to say for both units. Blitzing is still causing problems but the emergence of a guy like Beasley can really put the NFC East, and other blitz-happy defenses in a quandary. Most interesting will be the future games against Wash, Philly and NY. Can the 'boys apply what they learned in the first encounter? Will Beasley become a bigger part of the offense on third downs by then? Can Williams keep up a one TD per game pace, or even every other game? Can Austin get healthy and cause yet more headaches for opposing DC's? Will Dez become "like Megatron" [lol] with more attention being paid to Witten, Austin, Williams and Beasley?

All juicy questions for the offense...

Our receiving corps is better than Calvin Johnson, CJ is better than Dez but not by much[thats not a knock on either of them btw]

We have a top ranked DT in Hatcher and good line backers..I can't wait for us to get ware back..

Still not in favor of the idea of promoting Beasley to a larger role yet. He is great in his current role where Ds don't really concentrate on him, but make him a #3 and things change. For some reason with the WR position, there is always this thought that guys just can easily move up the pecking order just cause they saw them make a few catches......it just doesn't work like that, the position is alot harder than that.

Romo is the type of QB that needs alot of weapons around him to be successful, and Beasley is one of those guys. This season, his role will increase somewhat but saying he needs a large role like 75-80 percent of snaps is just wayyyy too much. Allow time for Miles, cause he deserves time in the slot if healthy cause he just plain has more upside than Beasley for this season.

Next season, perhaps Beasley should get that chance, but if we let Miles walk then Beasley will probably be competing with a draft pick.

Beasley's role is perfect. About 4 or 5 touches a game. I feel anything more will spell trouble for him and this offense. He's no Wes Welker. Every small white guy that comes in the NFL is "Wes Welker". I personally don't see it. Wes Welker has of the best hands in the NFL IMO.

9.3 yds per catch is no joke my friend. 18 of 20 for 167 and a 1 TD, with a DYAR of 64. He might not be Wes Welker but he was money (more than once) on the final TD drive against Philly. He is much more elusive than Austin is right now and has a better catch rate (90%) as well. Austin has not been right for a while. Austin has 28 targets, with a catch rate of 54% [15 of 28], 8.3 yds/catch, 125 yds, no TD's and a DYAR of -27. DYAR is defense-adjusted yards above replacement level and yes Austin is playing below replacement level. He is not contributing much to the Cowboy offense at present, hence the idea of sitting him for awhile.

Meanwhile, of all wide receivers in the league with less than 21 passes, Beasley tops them all.
Is he all world? No. Is he the top rated WR in the league Wes Welker? Absolutely not. Is he giving Romo more options on all important 3rd downs? I think the answer is yes, and the Cowboys can use another target besides Witten on key third downs. I'm pulling for the lad to do even more! Guys who catch balls in the clutch see more balls thrown their way in the clutch. If he continues his good catch rate then I'm sure Romo will continue to look "carefully" for him.
