Wide receiver value declining

..>> thanks the media for the decline. They cant focus with all that Glizzz in their face.

Are wide receivers about to drop in value?

For years, running backs have seen their worth devalued, while wide receivers rocketed up the draft boards. The already diva nature were blown up even larger, and they seemed to rule the league and all the attention.

But look at the last three drafts. First-round receivers are bustin' likes grapes. Then there's the Odell Beckham drama. The Jarvis Landry drama. The Dez Bryant drama. On and on. You know the names.

Now, RBs are re-finding their value.

Perhaps teams should focus on the nuts and bolts more....linemen and linebackers. It's hard to be bad when you are good in the trenches.

Who's the last big-name diva receiver to win a championship?

Exactly. The Demarious Thomas contract was a bust. The Dez contract was a bust. This is a common theme with too much money at that position.

Personally, I think this is good for football. The true value in terms of winning is found at other positions.
It’s the way the market is set up that I hate. All it takes is one Chad Johnson, and that player will drive up the market for everyone. WRs are like secondary players....there’s tons of em,and most are avg to bad. So YES I love it when the position gets devalued.

An OL eating DT or MLB at 19 intrigues me more.

I think there is also a direct correlation with the posters that want a WR at that 19 spot and their belief in Dak as the franchise QB and I am not there yet. If I was sold, I might be in a lean in that direction but I think if we can fix the D we help him more than getting a WR with that pick.

The other twist to this is what if NYG picks Barkley? PHL was 3rd in the rush. We could see the return of smash mouth East ball and that WR isn't going to be much help. I would sure like it better if they addressed that middle of the front 7 early on than a WR.
yeah I got ya. I really liked Dak in the beginning, now a little on the fence with him, I think there were a lot of factors so I give him this year, but a repeat means next years draft QB.
I think our LB core has to be addressed because we all saw what happened when Lee was out. it would be LB in first, WR in 2nd.

Reality seems to be the opposite of your speculation. WRs were drastically over-valued in free agency.

Look at the contracts handed out to WRs this offseason.
  • Sammy Watkins - one healthy year, catches 40 balls. 3 years, $48 million.
  • Jarvis Landry - 112 catches, 987 yards. I have no idea how how you catch 112 balls and don't break 1,000. 5 years, $75 million.
  • Paul Richardons - one healthy year, caught 40 balls. 5 years, $40 million.
  • Albert Wilson - definition of a JAG. 3 years, $24 million. He's averaging more per year than Sean Lee.
Then look at the draft last year. Corey Davis, Mike Williams and John Ross all went top 10, plus McCaffrey in large part thanks to his receiving prowness. All of them were very average prospects that got reached for over studs like Hooker, Barnett and Lattimore. None of the receivers did jack.

The WR market isn't declining right now - it's priced out the roof.

Also, Donte Moncrief got 9.6m guaranteed from the Jags.

And none of those receivers were wanted by their former teams.

Dumb teams will still do dumb deals. The two Super Bowl teams don't have high-priced receivers.

This year, we may only see one or two receivers taken in the first round. The bust rate is scaring teams.

Were they not wanted by their former teams, or were the teams just priced out of the market? Did we not want Anthony Hitchens?

The Eagles just handed Alshon Jeffrey a 4 year $52 million deal, so they're paying big bucks to wideouts too.

Are wide receivers about to drop in value?

A few things should drop WR value.

Colleges are going pass happy, so the pool of WRs are deeper.

Pass happy NFL offenses are using *more* WRs on the field at a time, which dilutes the value of top players.

Also, the pass happy NFL means WRs are taking more targets per game and per season than they used to, likely wearing them down at a younger age. Young guys got some big honking contracts, but there was a marked dropoff for the older players.

Only $14 million of Jeffrey's contract is guaranteed.

We’ll see how much we devalue WR if we use our 1st round pick on one.

We’re all trying to justify letting Dez go.

I'd consider that a messed up board.

If I see a receiver taken at #19, I'm viewing it as a reach.
Well, there are only 15 real first round picks in this draft, one of those happens to be a WR. If he's there at 19 and he's the best player available, you take him.

I don't think Ridley is a consensus top 15 pick.
