This is the last position that is what I consider to be a serious need for the Cowboys in the 2009 Draft, after OL, DL, LB and DB... the remaining positions are less critical this time around, IMO...
SECOND ROUND:
Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina... 6-1, 210 pounds, 4.5 second 40... I think he looks downright Michael Irvin-esque... may not still be on the board at pick 51...
Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State... 6-3, 210 pounds, 4.45 second 40... a polished wideout who does many things well, none of them exceptionally well... he also might not be on the board at pick 51...
Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers... 6-3, 216 pounds, 4.45 second 40... and a third receiver who might be on the board at 51, or might not... the thing with all three wideouts is that there are no fewer than 4 others who rate higher than any of them-- Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin and Darrius Heyward-Bey, all of whom should be first rounders...
This means that the final one of the three listed above to come off the board will be the 7th best WR in this draft, and I don't recall 7 WRs falling in the top 50 picks that often... if I had to guess which one might fall, my guess would be Nicks, who was about 15 pounds overweight at his recent Pro Day (he was nursing a bad hamstring, wasn't able to work out this offseason)...
Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma... 6-1, 210 pounds, 4.45 second 40... Iglesias should still be on the board in the later 2nd round, but probably won't be much past early in round 3... the Boys have shown some interest in Juaquin (and let's hope he's not as big a flake as Joaquin Phoenix)...
The Boys could likely add a nice talent if they chose to go WR in round 2...
ROUND THREE:
Mike Thomas, WR/KR, Arizona... 5-8, 195 pounds, 4.3 second 40... small but blazing fast, Thomas also offers a lot as a kick returner...
Derrick Williams, WR/KR, Penn State... 6-0, 195 pounds, 4.45 second 40...
Pat White, WR, West Virginia... 6-0, 195 pounds, 4.5 second 40... if Jerry's serious about putting in the Wildcat offense, White would be a logical pick...
I don't care much for Williams, but I do like Thomas... at the same time, I think the 3rd round is a little too early to draft a player whose main value early on will be as a kick returner... as a result, I don't think I'd go WR in the 3rd round...
ROUND FOUR:
Kevin Ogletree, WR, Virginia... 6-1, 195 pounds, 4.35 second 40... I was surprised when Ogletree ran that fast at his Pro Day, I always saw him as a 4.5 40 type...
Ramses Barden, WR, Cal Poly... 6-6, 230 pounds, 4.5 second 40... a king-size possession style receiver, who some scouts think could make the move to H-back...
Jarett Dillard, WR, Rice... one of my absolute favorite "pet cats" in this draft, even if he doesn't offer anything in the way of special teams value... the guy scored 60 TDs in college, 'nuff said as far as I'm concerned...
Brandon Tate, WR/KR, North Carolina... 6-0, 185 pounds, 4.45 second 40... Tate was posting obscene numbers in the return game when he got hurt last season (something like 22 yards per punt return)... if he's healthy, he might be a steal here...
Johnny Knox, WR, West Texas A&M... 6-0, 186 pounds, 4.3 second 40... Knox is shooting up draft boards these days, a few weeks ago he was considered a late round prospect at best...
I'd purely love to see the Boys add Dillard in this range, even if he'll never be any more than a slot receiver in the NFL... I have a hunch he's gonna be a very good slot receiver...
ROUND FIVE:
Mike Wallace, WR, Mississippi... 6-1, 200 pounds, 4.3 second 40... terrific size/speed ratio...
Wallace is about the only receiver likely to go in this range that I kinda like, suggesting the 5th round might not be the round for the Boys to go for a wideout...
ROUND SIX/ROUND SEVEN:
Dominique Edison, WR, Stephen F. Austin... 6-2, 206 pounds, 4.45 second 40...
Quan Cosby, WR/KR, Texas... 5-9, 195 pounds, 4.45 second 40... yeah, he's just 5-9, and he'll be a 27 year old rookie, and those two facts will push him down a round or two in this draft... which might make him a steal in the 6th round... then again, I'm a Horns fan, LOL...
Deon Butler, WR, Penn State... 5-11, 186 pounds, 4.3 second 40... speed always deserves consideration this late in a draft...
Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU... 6-0, 195 pounds, 4.35 second 40... see above...
I'd be real happy to add Cosby in the 6th round...
Jamarko Simmons, WR, Western Michigan... 6-2, 230 pounds, 4.5 second 40... big possession receiver...
Marko Mitchell, WR, Nevada... 6-4, 216 pounds, 4.45 second 40... a late-round favorite of mine... great size/speed ratio...
Dudley Guice, WR, Northwestern State (La.)... 6-3, 210 pounds, 4.4 second 40... this kid is just rocketing up draft boards here lately, and his computer numbers intrigue me...
Jason Chery, WR, Louisiana-Lafayette... 5-11, 190 pounds, 4.45 second 40... might be more dangerous as a kick returner than he is as a receiver...
PRIORITY UNDRAFTED ROOKIE FREE AGENTS:
Brennan Marion, WR, Tulsa... 6-0, 186 pounds, 4.5 second 40... not real big, and not real fast, but averaged an amazing 28.7 yards per catch over the last 2 years (82 catches, 2356 yards)... that's some serious big play potential, he must be dangerous after the catch...
Julian Edelman, WR, Kent State... 5-11, 195 pounds, 4.5 second 40... the Boys have shown some interest in this late round prospect, whose bio reads a bit like Patrick Crayton's coming out of college...
Charly Martin, WR, West Texas A&M... 6-1, 206 pounds, 4.5 second 40... completely dominant at a low level of competition, Martin holds the Lone Star Conference record for career receptions (244) and career TDs (44)... he put up 4108 career receiving yards, a 16.8 yards per catch average...
I have to admit, I'm a little conflicted when it comes to the WR position and this draft... with the loss of TO, I'd like to add a little insurance at this position, and at times I tell myself I'd like to see the Boys add one of the bigger name wideouts (Nicks, Britt, Robiskie, Iglesias)... but at other times I think that I'd rather the Cowboys address other issues with their second and third round picks (OL and S), and that I could happily live with a Dillard, Knox or Cosby in the middle rounds...
