This doesn't take away that he was obviously lazy off the field. Pure talent only takes you so far, plenty of superstar players became cancers for teams and were cut.

If your work ethic is trash, it eventually catches up to you. If he shows up out of shape again, it's a huge red flag - getting the money he's getting with the expectations placed on him, there is zero excuses for not being ready for an opener.

No excuses justifies that unless he was battling an injury that was kept hidden.
