Wilfork Fined $5K --

The Boston Globe reports Patriots NT Vince Wilfork has been fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness -- striking an opponent late -- during Sunday's game against the Cowboys. The play in question came at the opening of the second quarter. The Cowboys faced a second-and-5 from their 43-yard line and Marion Barber rushed for 3 yards. Patriots DE Ty Warren was penalized for unnecessary roughness on the play, and Wilfork -- who was not flagged on the play -- was deemed to have struck TE Jason Witten late.

Why do I have the feeling this will turn into a bash the officials thread?

It should turn into a "Bash The Patriots" thread. These guys play dirty and by that I mean they tried to intimidate our guys with unsportsmanlike conduct. I really hope we get another crack at these Bozo's with a healthy secondary.

Bash both.

Careful there, certain posters who will remain nameless, will call you out for whinning if you mention the officiating or that the Pats are dirty.

On a side note, where is the fine for going at Romo's knees???

That play was perfectly legal.

I've never played football, so explain to me why? Is it because of some interior line play, or box play or what?

It just is. There is nothing in the rule books saying you can't chop block an edge rusher. The only way it's illegal is it's a crack back (WR blocking down on him) or if he was chopped while already engaged with another offensive lineman.

The pats ran a quick pass to the outside on that play, it's the tackles job to chop the OLB/DE down quickly so he can't get his hands up and bat the pass away (which is what Ware tried to do).

So, as long as it's from the front, right? And not from the sides or backside, which is the chop block. I guess that is why Denver and a few other teams play that way?

Glad I did not play football because I'm a wimp! I would not like to get hit head on on the knees...! Or any knees for that matter:eek:

What about the dive at Romo's knees?

A chop block is ANYTIME you block below the waist, legal or not.

A crackback is not necessarily a chop block. A crackback is when someone lined up wide (usually a WR) blocks down on a LB or DE (usually a blindside hit but not necessary a block in the back). A crackback doesn't mean chopblock.

On a crackback, it is illegal to chop block. But the line can chopblock the DL/LBs as long as the DL/LB isn't already engaged by another offensive player.

The broncos often chopblock while the defender is already engaged by another offensive player and that's what pisses defenders off, and it's illegal.

I played WR in High School and nothing was more sweet than cracking back and taking out a DE or LB moving lateral unaware. As long as you took them on square they never called it unless you went low
