Hey guys, I was thinking maybe the Jets brought Austin in to look at him this year so when he is an UFA next year they could sign him for nothing.
Sometimes teams do this with restricted guys, take a look at them during their restricted year so they have a leg up on the competition if that player hits free agency the next year.
However, I just realized that unless the CBA is extended then Austin will not be an UFA. As I understand the rules, Austin currently has 3 accrued seasons in the NFL (restricted FA). Now next year he will have 4 accrued seasons and normally would be a free agent, but next year is uncapped.
In the uncapped year, to be a UFA you have to have 6 accrued seasons instead of 4 accrued seasons (like normally). So Austin would not qualify to be an UFA.
So would Austin again be a restricted free agent next year and receive another tender or would he not even quailfy for that (would he need 5 accrued seasons to be a restricted FA in the uncapped season since 6 is the threshold to be an UFA)???
