Will Daron Bland replace Gilmore in 2024?

Bland probably isn't a long-term solution at CB because they aren't going to pay him AND Diggs.

If Bland ends up with another 10 INTs through the end of 2024, he should hold out and ask for a $20m/year extension. He'd get it, on the open market, after 3 prolific seasons.

Still not convinced he’s ready/good yet. Bad qb with no wr. Next few weeks will see - schedule brutal.
this game has obviously revved some engines, but he's got a body of work already. he's leading the league in picks since arriving

Gilmore was traded to Cowboys and currently has this one year remaining on his existing contract.
He is set to be a UFA in 2024.

He will also 34 years of age in '24 as well. Usually that's a tail end career of a vet CB.
And Gilmore clearly is a stopgap answer at this time,

Bland is a young, big, fast and he is a natural ballhawk INT.
Once he keeps and stays in position, he can bead forward and break upon the passing lanes of the QB.
I've always regretted passing upon Chargers' Asante Samuels Jr. but Bland is proving he is well
adjusting to playing on the outside in just 2 games.

It will be interesting to see him how he fares against the better stalwart passes ala Burdy, Hurts, Hebert and Tua
(and WRs) that are on our incoming schedule.
Yes, 100%. I thought he was going to do it THIS year.

Bland now has 7 interceptions, three of those have been pick sixes, in his first 10 games played.
Has that just been dumb luck?
What else does a guy have to do?
I apologize. I sold the guy short like everyone else.

Bland has had 8 interceptions in his first 10 games as a starter.

the irony
no because in this case it wasn't necessary I mean I knew what he was asking but I didn't know the details of what he posted but knowing the subject I was able to reply without reading but I was just saying that just in case there was something I might have missed but yeah I'm multitask I'm busy I used talk to text and a lot of my stuff are rambling long winded no break run on sentences and it'll continue to be that way and how about you don't post unless you actually have something to add to the thread or to what I said not pick something out and start something you wanna start something this morning you need some proof that that would be not a good thing? Roll eyes

If the Cowboys really want to re-sign a player they consider a core player - they get re-signed.
Some still do not understand how the NFL cap goes.

But Bland is not yet an All pro status at the outside starting role.
When that full time role comes (2024?) and he receives that all star status, then it's time to talk
big contract re-signing. But that's a long time away.

I understand how the cap goes, they could afford it if they wanted to. I don't think they'll want to.

It's not a long way off for Bland, it could be after next season, and will be before Micah.

Bland's rookie contract is up in 2025. That's 2 years away and still a way off.

And again, Bland will have to establish star status one of the better CBs as outside CB.. first.
Those award status comes into contract play.

That is not gonna interfere or disrupt plans to re-sign super-core players like Parsons, Lamb.

Which is why I said, if he's good this year and next year, he should hold out and not play that 4th year without an extension.

Yes, they can sign those guys. The question is what is the opportunity cost of having two corners $20m per year. Dallas can sign Bland if they want, I'm saying that I don't think they would.

Many did not think we'd re-sign Donovan and Hooker either, but we did.
The front office thoughts, player views and maybe different than what/how we see it.

Bland is the Cowboys most complete CB. I think Dallas drafts a CB with a premium next draft as insurance for Diggs and replacement for Gilmore.

Ok but they are safeties so pretty immaterial to the conversation.

But these are the players you probably can't re-sign if you have to high-paid corners.

Actually it's not.
As mentioned before, if the Cowboys really want to re-sign certain players, they do it.
Those safeties they did re-sign, did not sign record breaking long term contracts.

What you cannot do is sign everyone, you'd have to prioritize high value players vs " average" players
as Stephen Jones could call them. Cannot give average players big money.

Although I can argue him re-signing LVE over Bobby Wagner.

Do safeties get $20m per year? No. Immaterial.

We need Gilmore for another season, we don’t know yet if Diggs is going to be 100% at the start of the season.

The fact that Gilmore's name was scarcely mentioned last night indicates that he was doing a bang-up job governing his little island.

I figured that would be the plan before Diggs got hurt. We just didn't want to go into this season forcing it, especially since we didn't know how long Lewis would be out. Glad to see this because this front office isn't usually that proactive.

Not sure what we do in the slot, though. Do we re-sign Lewis?
