Will Downs Start His Career In The Slot?

The 4-2-5 is the nickel defense we’ll play a bunch. The “slot”, is the “5” in the 4-2-5.

Depending on the down, distance, and offensive personal, the slot will be either the “Spur” where he replaces a LB in a “big nickel” for use against 2 TE sets or the “Star” where he replaces the CB in a “traditional nickel” for use against 3 wr sets

It’s the gift of his versatility that allows him to essentially play three different positions. Without him, we are constantly shuffling personnel, tipping our defense to the offense, and being caught with the wrong people on the field when the offense goes with tempo.

This is the first remotely innovative defense we’ve seen in years despite the fact that the concepts have been around for awhile

We just didn’t have a coach who was willing to commit to it until Schottenheimer hired Parker.

So, I imagine we’ll hear lots more about spur and star in training camp

Downs is a truly special box safety, like the kind of guy who only shows up a couple times per decade. I am not sold on his man coverage ability, but when it comes to run defense and under-zone coverage, he is Built Different. He may be already be the best linebacker on this team... if we discount Overshown, he clearly is.

You want him down in that slot role. He's good as a deep safety, but slot is where he could be a game breaker.

I hope and pray everyday he gets his head turned around and is able to locate the ball. Hoping that Downs will break this HAUNTED curse in Dallas that has plagued us for years!!!!!

Is that something people are gambling on, too? I think he and Thompson are going to be swapping positions a fair amount but I think more often than not Downs will be the Nickel, so, yeah, fair chance.

I think many continue to confuse CPs slot corner with a traditional slot corner. First off don't forget it also says he will play both safety spots and second this isn't new. But it is important to note that when he is lined up as the slot corner as he often will, and as we have been told since day 1, he isn't just covering the slot receiver like a traditional slot corner. It is a true hybrid position. It's a mix of corner, safety. and LBer. He will cover, be up in run support and blitz as well. It's more Kyle Hamilton than Jourdan Lewis

That sounds on point to me. Nice post.

Yeah I agree. Downs will play the slot but he’s not really a slot corner. That would be a massive waste of his talents.

Things are going to change once they realize he can rush the passer and cover a route at the same time.

Do not doubt me, you’ll be wrong.

Still can't believe he fell to Dallas. Super excited to see him on the field this season.
