The 4-2-5 is the nickel defense we’ll play a bunch. The “slot”, is the “5” in the 4-2-5.
Depending on the down, distance, and offensive personal, the slot will be either the “Spur” where he replaces a LB in a “big nickel” for use against 2 TE sets or the “Star” where he replaces the CB in a “traditional nickel” for use against 3 wr sets
It’s the gift of his versatility that allows him to essentially play three different positions. Without him, we are constantly shuffling personnel, tipping our defense to the offense, and being caught with the wrong people on the field when the offense goes with tempo.
This is the first remotely innovative defense we’ve seen in years despite the fact that the concepts have been around for awhile
We just didn’t have a coach who was willing to commit to it until Schottenheimer hired Parker.
So, I imagine we’ll hear lots more about spur and star in training camp
