TIDBIT FROM MAILBAG: Q. Will first-round pick Bobby Carpenter be inactive for the whole season?

—Gerald Clarke, Washington, D.C.

Carpenter, the former Ohio State linebacker, was active Sunday against the Commanders after missing the opener against the Jaguars. He replaced fellow linebacker Oliver Hoyte, who Parcells considers to be the better special teams player and wanted to use against Jacksonville's stellar return units. On Sunday, Carpenter played on the punt coverage, kickoff return and kickoff coverage units. He also replaced Akin Ayodele in the nickel defense but failed to register a tackle. Asked how Carpenter did on special teams, Parcells said, {quot}Fair.{quot} Asked how Carpenter did in the nickel, Parcells said, {quot}OK.{quot}

I usually like Orsborn, but this is kind of stupid...

He asks if Carpenter will be inactive the whole season, then turns around and says he was active in the last game.

It looks to me like he will get more playing time as the season progresses...

What a awful 1st round pick. Hell the guy didnt even play in Ohio St. bowl game against Notre Dame and their defense didnt even miss him.

I guess you win some and lose some with the draft but who drafts a LB in the 1st round when he isnt even the best LB on the team?

Unless I am reading it wrong, it looks as if Orsborn is answering the question of one Gerald Clarke, Washington, D.C.

Now that I reread it I see that... The fact that it has "tidbit" in front of it kind of skews it for me...

Tidbit... now who thought THAT would be a good word in the English language...

That is an interesting question.

Carp. couldn't have done too bad, they basically shut down the Deadskin passing game until trash time, and Carp was in on a ton of Nickel plays.

I think Carpenter will be just fine and not concerned that he is not playing much right now. Dallas has some good vets in front of him and I have little doubt that Carpenter will see more playing time this season.

I think he's riding the pine for depth reasons more than anything else... and that's fine.

Looking back at the first two rounds of the draft, I don't see anyone yet where I clearly say "Man, I can't believe we passed on HIM!" I'm sure someone will emerge by season's end, but that still doesn't mean he's a bust yet.

That's just ridiculous. Carp is gonna turn out to be a great player. He's not playing now, because of our depth. Parcells knows what he is doing. We had even more depth when he was drafted and we still took him. This pick was for the long term. Like 3 yrs down the road. I have one question for you. Were you one of the posters calling Bradie a bust? Come on be honest.

No I didn't. We didn't take him in the 1st round in a area that we already had plenty of help. The problem with Carp is he wasn't the best LB on his team and how do you reach for a guy in the 1st rd where we already had enough players at that spot.

We needed help else where and should have drafted for those positions or traded down and then drafted for those positions. Instead of reaching for someone because someone knew his dad.

We had no idea Ellis could make that switch.

We had no idea if Akin could make the transition to the 3-4.

We had no idea how Burnett would do coming back from his injury.

Carpenter was the right player at the right time, and will be a very good player down the road.

What are you talking about? Why would we sign Akin to a 4+ year deal if we didnt think he would work. Plus we had Singleton and we knew he was pretty good. Plus we had Shanle and Boiman. We had plenty of LB's

The "best" LB on his team was AJ Hawk. He's not setting the Packers on fire at this time, but was regarded as the "safest pick in the draft". Hawk, Greenway and Sims were taken ahead of Carpenter, and Lawson was taken four picks later. There was little debate on where the cowboy's off-season priorities were, and they upgraded at WR (Owens) and were able to flesh out the missing pieces of the defense. There was no real opportunity to trade down, and IMHO, the Cowboys got good value in the draft. The only dissapointment for me was the failure of Skyler Green to make the team. Offsetting that is the surprise progress of Rector and the rookie FA Sam Hurd. We got a good find in FS Watkins and big surprise in McQuistan. I don't know who you would rather have taken, but the conventional wisdom has Carpenter taken about where he belonged. Maybe we should view him in the same light as I view Ellis: a steady, not flashy player who's here for the long haul. I'm not sure what strategy you had in mind in terms of getting better value in the draft, but I looked at the players picked later in that round and in the early second, but I don't see any glaring errors in the picks. I would have thought that Marcus McNeil might have been a pick, but there were issues about his back which scared off a few teams. The Cowboys also felt that they had addressed their O-Line via the free agency route. Judging by the last game, they should feel a little better, but only time will tell.

What has impacted Carpenter is the emergence of Greg Ellis and the decision to move Carpenter inside, which several scouts said would be a positive move for him. ( I'm not sure I agree) In the move to a 3-4 defense, there was a priority on getting upgrades on the D-Line and at LB. If you examine the last two drafts, you'll (hopefully) see that Parcell's mission was accomplished. There is depth and the ability to have a D-Line rotation, as well as the flexibility to have a a potent pass rush from a variety of different formations.

As for picking Carpenter because Parcells new his dad; please, give me a break. Take a look at the scouting reports and tell me nobody else was interested. Carpenter will play more and learn more as time goes on. He was not a "reach" , nor is he a bust. The Cowboys played this draft to it's strengths (LB) and avoided it's weaknesses (WR)

He'll be inactive all season because he's a bust and sucks....should have taken Manny Lawson who's on his way to rookie of the year. Better yet we shouldn't have got rid of Shanle who is currently making a splash with the 2-0 Saints.

Lawson plays for a team that lacks overall talent of course he is starting there he be on the bench in Dallas behind Greg Ellis and he be learing a new poistion since he was a DE in college.

So whats your point plus Shanle was going to be backup or cut from this team.

Keep throwing those same comments against the wall maybe they will stick one day.
