Jerry has established a lot of roster building patterns since he's been the owner.
For a while he chose to ignore the offensive line but finally saw Romo laying in the fetal position one too many times.

He chose to gamble our second round pick for years on injured players problem players and some players that just downright didn't work out.

He was always good for drafting a tight end that we really didn't need.

Sometimes going buckwild on the wide receiver position and overpaying.

After Brandon Carr he decided he was spending little or no money on free agents.

He was never up for using a first round draft pick on a quarterback always bound and bent on finding the diamond in the rough.

He made neglecting the defensive tackle position and absolute art form up until this year and suddenly he decided to address it and lo and behold we can stop the run and get some stops on one of the best running teams in the league for that matter.
Yes I know we used to pick on Mozzy but it was very evident that did nothing

It has sure taken a long time but I'm in hopes that he takes the same approach with the defensive line that he finally did with the offensive line and it clicks in his head that to get any further in the postseason the defensive tackle position is key.

I realize one rose doesn't make summer but I'm hoping this gives him some type of incentive to perpetuate a powerful physical defensive line.

What do you guys think do the spots get changed on the leopard and Jerry finally gets it or does he let it Go by the wayside.

Will it finally click in Jerry's consciousness

No.

Jones has been trial-and-erroring for nearly thirty years. It is a long, established and permanent mindset. The most hopeful outcome is him overseeing a specific team in a particular season where all pieces have luckily fallen into place.

Jerry's primary plan is to pack the Stadium full and keep those primetime TV slots. Mission accomplished. Not much else matters, it's all entertainment after that

Good post Blackie.

Unfortunately, I remain skeptical that Jerry Jones has learned enough from his decades of mistakes to be able to get our Cowboys in position to be better than we’ve been the last three decades.

Why do I say that?

Well the biggest lesson he still hasn’t learned is that he has no business being the team’s GM. He’s the only owner in the entire league who thinks hiring himself as GM works. Because the owner has to think differently than the GM. The GM cannot waste time thinking about how to market his team (which Jerry does all the time) because he needs to be focused on a building a great roster.

And speaking of roster building - the great GMs know they must build a complimentary roster. A complete 53 man roster where the talent of each player compliments or even increases the strengths of the team’s “stars”. Jerry thinks about signing a few stars at premium price and then goes cheap filling in the rest of the roster.

The acquisition of Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams has really helped this team and 2026 look a lot better. But this is still the same GM who thought using a 4th on Trey Lance was sound; using another 4th on acquiring a deep backup WR in Jonathan Mingo. Or using a 5th rounder on CB Kaiir Elam, now on the street.

Has Jerry changed? Until he recognizes that HE HIMSELF is the problem, no I don’t think anything major has “kicked in”.

Hopefully I’m wrong. But 3 decades of evidence are hard to overcome.

Jerry has always been and will always be a reactionary GM.
:hammer:

He has gotten much better at the role. (Hard not to with how bad it was in late 90's) But yeah, he's just not a good GM. He's had 30 years to prove it. Good owner, great merchandiser and business deal negotiator..... lousy GM. He has no choice but to react or he loses everything else he gained on the owner/merchandiser side.

^ This. For example, Jerry Jones was at the epicenter of the Micah Parsons' situation in the spring. Here is a hypothetical:

If Jones had accessed the situation properly at that time, he might have facilitated the same or similar trade before the draft. That would have benefitted him and the team with more offseason options that could have generated player acquisitions such as a Quinnen Williams or a similar player in one instance.

Unfortunately, Jones *knows* his way is the only best way. He thought he could get Parsons to finally cave. He thought wrong. His reaction time was months way too late. That cost him and the team possible and realistically probable upgrading before the regular season started.

Mad Genius thangs.

got to admit the old man keeps it fun and shocks us some times

Keeps.
It.
Fun?

For who exactly? That is the kind of fun for ER personnel seeing a drug seeker check themselves in every week.

What he's got this time?

"A superficial laceration."

Shocking.

Sadly, nothing has changed in their standard operating procedure. They still believe in their process of building solely through the draft. The Parsons trade allowed for more flexibility. It might be a blessing in disguise.

Cowboys SOP, draft, fill holes with league minimum FAs, make the occasional trade for washed up players. Make splash trades for emergencies. Like Cooper back in 2018.

The Cowboys don't have to sign stars in FA. But can they at least sign a few good players? Do that and we might be contenders in 2026.

Jerry is an unprepared procrastinator and wings it at the last moment when he is forced to make a decision with his gut instincts. He likes the adrenaline of it that way.

If we made the trade for Williams sooner, we would be in a different position.

I know Jerry will say it takes 2 and they were not ready yet to make the trade. I call BS. Everything happens at a deadline with Jerry, while other teams get things done before a deadline.

So, what you are saying is that Jerry has had on the job training for 29 years as GM and is finally starting to figure things out?
That's a shame because we can never get those 29 seasons back.

It is likely other members agree, but you and I have different interpretations of fun, lol.
