If Rico shows development he won't make it another season on the practice squad. He would probably be a final cut waiver pick up for a team.

Hanna was actually practicing on the side as early as the Sheagles game.

The question is, "What is mgt's strategy?"

It should have become obvious by now that Escobar is a fish out of water with this team, and will most likely be gone.

Hanna is also a tweeter, but he can block effectively and may be retained at the right price.

Swaim is essentially Witten light, so he may eventually be the best fit; he'll have to become more zone-wise and sure-handed.

Then our most dynamic upside athlete is Rico.
He won't last on the PS, probably not even this year. And I can't see mgt letting this pet cap go after developing him. So, if he's on the roster and given Escobar packages, we may have to lose Hanna or Swaim; Hanna is more expense, so we may be without him. Injury in camp may sort this out, even including the old man (Witten).

Witten: One more year for certain.

Swaim: He had a pec injury. He'll likely be fine before training camp.

Hanna: I'm not sure if micro-fracture was confirmed or just assumed based on him having a 2nd surgery after the initial report of a bone bruise. Anthony Spencer was initially listed with a bone bruise and then had micro-fracture surgery.

Rico: They say he was Romo's favorite target on the scout team. He has a considerable size advantage (about 290 pounds) over most TEs so he should physically be able to block if he can learn the scheme enough to know who to block.

They've carried 4 TEs at times, so it's possible all 4 could be on the 53. Rico won't last on the practice squad again. They made a deal with him to not take other offers in 2016, but if he does not make the 53 he'll take an offer from another team.

I'll probably get grilled for saying this, but I think Geoff Swaim has the potential to eventually replace Witten. I'm not saying he'll be Witten's equal, but Swaim is a heck of a blocker and looked good in his minimal chances in the passing game.

I remember Jason Garrett saying Swaim had "complete TE traits" after the Cowboys drafted him a couple years ago.

No other tight end on this team is good enough besides Witten that their job can't be had by a better player.

I won't grill you at all. You're right on. The QB seems to like Swaim as well so that bodes well. The team did give up two draft picks to get him.

I wouldn't mind a committee type of approach to life after Witten.
