Will McClay on NFL Rule Change for Roster Cut Down from 90-to-53 Players: “It’s Going to Be Chaos”

Will McClay, Cowboys Senior Director of College/Pro Personnel, has a prediction following Tuesday’s announcement that NFL owners approved a rule change regarding mandatory roster cut downs at the end of training camp. “It’s going to be chaos,” McClay says with a laugh, predicting an even busier time for personnel departments following the final preseason game.

The rule change eliminates the first roster cut down from 90-to-75 players which took place before the final preseason game. Under the new rule, there is only one mandatory roster cut down, from 90-to-53 players, and it will take place following the end of preseason action.

“It allow guys an extra opportunity to earn a roster spot in the final preseason game, but it also makes the personnel side a lot busier in the final cut down time,” McClay says of the change. “It’s going to be a little bit different. It’s going to be chaos because during the 90-to-75 cut down you had time to look at the guys they cut before. You had a good feel for those, and then you could figure out the other roster and think of players they’re going to cut and get ahead of it. Now, depending on when teams let people go, it’s going to be a little more difficult.” As for getting through the final preseason game, McClay acknowledges the new rule makes it easier to rest key backups as well as starters because there are now more players available, 90 instead of 75. Those final in-game reps could be the difference-maker for players that are ‘on-the-bubble’. Still, there’s an injury risk for all players...

Better chance of players slipping through the cracks and getting onto the practice squad?

Maybe they should have sort of half stepped it, make it a "designation to be released", that team can rescind but if not at 12:01am on the Monday after last preseason game you are a FA.

Really smart rule change here. But it'll make that last preseason game basically unwatchable since almost none of the guys who play in it will actually make the team
I agree. The last preseason game was nearly unwatchable even before this move. Now it will be much much worse.

Well thought out. The NFL will have none of that.
