Will McClay, Cowboys Senior Director of College/Pro Personnel, has a prediction following Tuesday’s announcement that NFL owners approved a rule change regarding mandatory roster cut downs at the end of training camp. “It’s going to be chaos,” McClay says with a laugh, predicting an even busier time for personnel departments following the final preseason game.
The rule change eliminates the first roster cut down from 90-to-75 players which took place before the final preseason game. Under the new rule, there is only one mandatory roster cut down, from 90-to-53 players, and it will take place following the end of preseason action.
“It allow guys an extra opportunity to earn a roster spot in the final preseason game, but it also makes the personnel side a lot busier in the final cut down time,” McClay says of the change. “It’s going to be a little bit different. Now, depending on when teams let people go, it’s going to be a little more difficult.” As for getting through the final preseason game, McClay acknowledges the new rule makes it easier to rest key backups as well as starters because there are now more players available, 90 instead of 75. Those final in-game reps could be the difference-maker for players that are ‘on-the-bubble’. Still, there’s an injury risk for all players...
