Will McClay?

McClay is viewed as some sort of a personnel genius in Dallas. To be fair the drafts have been much better of late. Can never forget the Jerry led days of special teams drafts. McClay also heads up the pro scouting so he is largely responsible for the FA pick ups. Last 3 years of FA's:

2017- Paea, Carroll, Moore, Bell, Blanton, Hillman
2016 - Thorton, Mayowa, Morris, Sanchez, Looney
2015 - Hardy, Gachkar, McClain, McFadden, Barden, Brown

That is some group. To me Looney is the best pick up. Morris and Madden tied for second. Third is........Mayowa??? I toss McClain and Hardy for obvious reasons. My point is that Dallas has been terrible with FA signings. Terrible. Several of these guys didn't make the teams. Free Agency is a crapshoot at best but compare the Eagles pickups over the last 2 years. Not good.

Fans tend to overrate their own. Can the same be said for Will McClay? Compared to Jerry a bag of rocks would be better but I am starting to question the "Genius" of Will McClay.

It's important you take in consideration that by default going into each Free Agency over the last few years they have been looking for bargain basement deals. So, yeah, McClay might be the guy responsible for picking guys that didn't work out, but he was shopping at the thrift store in the first place, so...you have to keep your expectations tempered.

You don't need to sign FAs when you draft your entire team.

There have been good signings too - T. McClain, L Robinson, S Moore, J Durant, A Morris, B Butler, G Selvie. These guys have all come in and done exactly what they were expected to do. McClay should get some credit for David Irving as well. If people expect the Cowboys to do anything close to what the Eagles did last year, they're going to be perpetually disappointed, because they simply are not that type of franchise anymore.

And it really handicaps us and that's we've gone from America's team to Next Years team.

Maybe next year we'll get Earl Thomas, Frederick will be healthy, D Linemen won't get suspended, we'll have a TE, better coaching, Ect...

Totally agree. This has become the Cowboy mantra. But this doesn't feel like Landry's next year's champions. At least they were close in those days.

McClay is good. But he is only considered great here because we are used to complete ineptitude. Its like Jeff Heath. People think he is amazing. Because he happens to be our best safety, which means nothing. And our safety play has been so bad that he actually looks good to some people.

You also have to consider, the organization always had little money towards the salary cap and couldn't get the big name free agents. McClay done wonders with what he had to work with.

He's doing a better job than Jerry. When the bar is set so low it isn't hard to look impressive.

Not much better especially finding pro personnel. Jerry is far superior at that.

While it's harder to hit on cheap free agents he has still done a good job.

Since he has received more control in drafting we are way better. The draft strategy has us taking guys rated 1 round higher or more in many cases.
