Will McClay?

Dallas has been in salary cap hell for a while and they are just starting to come out from under it...McClay has been hamstrung there...
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

Hold on a minute here.

I hear on this very board, every year, that cap hell is a myth and we can do whatever we want in free agency.

So now you are saying it has hamstrung McClay?

McClay turned down a GM job to stay in his current role in Dallas. He's basically being paid like a GM. I refuse to use the word "genius" to describe anyone in football, but he's a well respected talent evaluator. He's certainly better at his job than Jerry and Jason are at their jobs.
He also has zero accountability.

Regular GMs get their feet held to the fire with practically every move they make. They get fired all the time.

I cannot say I blame him if the money is close. He has a good gig going here.

I don't think he stayed on to avoid accountability. He 's been with the cowboys since 2002 and Jerry gave him his first break. Not many arena ball guys got the opportunity he did. So, there is some loyalty involved as well. Its hard to hold him accountable b/c Jerry made all the decisions for so long and Will has got no sway over who coaches the team. In the NFL , a lot of success can be attributed to coaching up talent and using players in smart ways...........thats the ongoing problem in Dallas. Its a rare player that improves under this coaching staff and that is not McLays fault.

Not really implying intent, but think about it. Why would he leave if he can just do his job and be free from criticism?

If he has no ego and the money is there, why not? Being an NFL GM is not easy. Having Jerry Jones in front of you willing to take a bullet for you is comforting in comparison.

Its an alternative explanation but i'm not that cynical.

How do we know what Will McClay gets paid?

And whatever it is I'm pretty sure he's over paid anyway.

You guys seem to like to create an alternate reality that soothes your fan sensitivities. Where McClay is the secret GM (he's the assistant to the assistant), really good at what he does despite the state of the roster, and paid so well that he'll never leave.

With the evidence I've seen over his years here I can only conclude that Will McClay sucks too.

A Garrett brother is Director of Pro Scouting, not McClay.

Plus Stephen has said the days of paying big bucks in free agency are over. They are set on building through the draft and trying to extend young talent early, before they hit the market. He says that pretty much matter-of-fact during the pre-draft interviews.

Jerry apparently per his own words, has 2016 as an example this process can work, and he believes the assistant coaches and their play-calling is what allowed for that season.

Salary cap hell is what people write about when they have nothing to report and no understanding of cap management.

I saw the record prediction thread.

Question: if McClay is so good, why are most of the posters predicting a bad record?

Hold your horses there cowboy ... if garrett can't coach the talent, its not McClay's fault.

because the coaching sucks and McClay isn't at liberty of getting rid of Garrett

They can. The limit has been self imposed by Stephen Jones. It cost extra real dollars to push cap hits forward.
