For as good as he has been in the draft and getting us some really good talent he has been equally as bad signing free agents. I understand that he has had limited cap to work with and in the process he has set us up better financially but over the past 4-5 years he has had a ton of whiffs in free agency. Here is to hoping he could get some key additions this offseason and please, please stop with the bargain bin. It doesn't work here. We need some big time players. We need playmakers.

Dallas has been building the team the correct way, through the draft. It hurts a team to overpay during free-agency then they are in salary cap H*II. The flip-side to that is what happens if the free-agent does not perform or gets hurt? We have seen that before. I want the team to stay focused on drafting great, building the trenches and drafting players that have athletic ability that love playing the game of football. I love this young passionate team.

I want the Boys to draft another Wolf-Hunter.

He’s not the GM.

Obviously the team allocates very little money towards free agency. They care more about signing their own players.

You’re not going to ge top tier or even mid tier free agents when you have a philosophy of not paying much over league minimal.

I know but I would rather sign one impact player for 3-4 years than 3-4 guys with little to zero impact.

Yes because "building the right way" means being .500 for 20 years

Maybe we should try and build it "the wrong way" so we can win a SB or 2, you know, like NE, Philly, NO, Pittsburgh, Giants etc?

Here is to "building a team the wrong way"

Stephen is holding the purse strings and telling Will to try and land a few solid signings in low tier FA.

He usually tries to bring in guys that were drafted high and did not stick on another roster. More misses than hits in FA for sure— but hard to blame McClay when FA is simply not a priority for Stephen right now

I think you could start to see us leaning more towards FA in the couple of seasons. It almost already started with Sammy Watkins last year
That was a big blunder that cost us our first rounder and SJ even admitted that much.

How is that Joey Galloway and Roy Williams feeling? Mike Vanderjagt? Drew Henson? Alex Barron? I remember with Washington bought Albert Haynesworth, the Dallas fans lost their minds and ripped the FO for not making a deal. It kinduv worked out.

Sammy Watkins this past year, yep, the Boys dodged a bullet. Nate Solder for the Giants has been a dud, Malcolm Butler was a dud. Building through free-agency is difficult because of over paying above average players.

Now that the cap is somewhat respectable let's see what happens. The man never had a chance with all the dead money and limited space in the cap.
That's all gone now.

Will McClay has been the most successful draft guru the Cowboys have had since the days of Gil Brandt.
When a team has someone like that available, it's definitely to their advantage to keep him around. :flagwave:

McClay isn't the GM to go sign people - have you ever heard the words "Will McClay makes a deal for ___________" - no, it is "(insert appropriate first name) Jones trades our first rounder for ______________" ; not sure what Will could do if he was truly the GM with the power to make moves; we may not find out until he is grabbed up by another franchise

NE won most of their Super Bowls building through the draft. They have got more aggressive in their later years but they’re a team primarily built through the draft. Pittsburgh also very rarely chases free agents, same with GB who you left out. You can argue their discount bin free agents have been better than ours but they rely heavily on the draft.

The Giants teams had a couple free agents, same with NO(namely the QB) but Pitt and NE are pretty awful examples.

The team building aspect isn’t bad, it’s the coaching. Even for Philly, they made some aggressive moves but the core of that team was there with Chip Kelly(OL and DL). They just brought in a new coach and things started looking up.

Will only has so much pull in the organization and I would place the lack of FA prowess more on the penny pincher Stephen than I would Will.

But, regardless, Willi has been nails in guiding us to some amazing recent draft plucks.

FWIW, he has earned my trust.

He doesn't sign the FA's. That's Jerry and Stephen. It has been their idea to sign bottom of the barrel FA's.

First thing is no more ex-Eagle players. Next step is maybe look at a couple of week 2 players. I don't know if they're quite ready to return to the Top Tier Sweepstakes just yet & I'm OK with that.

I think we’ll allocate more to free agency considering we don’t have a first round pick. We’ll have more money this offseason. Resign tank. Give amari his money and sign earl lol

I think have been very good in FA.

You have to understand what we are looking for in free agency. We are looking for backups and 3rd stringers. Also cheap contracts we can get rid off without putting ourselfs in a bind.

It happened that we werent able to fill all our starting holes thru the draft still we never went into FA and filled that need by big contract signings. Always were looking for a way to not get ourself bound to a player. We want to build thru the draft and fill the bottom of the roster thru FA.

This FO is building a team the right way and McClay is one big reason to it.
