Will our 3-4 get more complex?

Watching good 3-4 defenses like the Pats have had, and the Steelers have, I see a lot of different looks. Guys moving around pre snap, masking the blitz different ways, zone blitzes, different stuff. Watching our 3-4 so far, I don't see much of this. I guess i'm just wondering if by next year when the defense has been together a season, will we do some of this stuff as well.

I am very pleased with what our defense has looked like so far this year, all things considered. Canty/Spears/Ware are all looking very good for this early in their careers, and with Ware learning on the go, but I think we may be one of the best defenses in the league next year if we can put some things together. Plug a good FS in there and you have the best secondary in the league in my opinion.

We have some warts still - some 4-3 guys carry over not fits and they are limiting it some.

That said, Ware, Spears, Canty, Fergi, Burnett, Shanle, Fujita, Henry are names that will benefit from 3-4 move.....

I think it safe to say that Parcells is doing his best to work the entire defense into the new scheme slowly. Emphasis on the basics for now with some decent blitz packages thrown in for good measure. But it's early yet. When the D is comfortable in the vanilla version, more packages will be added. I really think he's consciously trying to NOT feed them anymore than they can handle at any given time.

Football is a game of chess played by moving key pieces into strategic position(s) that give you an advantage. Many may hate to admit it, but Parcells is akin to Bobby Fisher.

Bill has mentioned they'll continue to keep things simple for a while while incorporating various wrinkles as they go along. Makes sense.

It will be nice when key defensive personnel feel more comfortable because then they can actually play fast. And they're not quite there yet. Not even with the base stuff it seems.

Gotta walk before you run. Once the players are comfortable they'll be given more. Happens on both sides of the ball in every imaginable offense and defense.

I don't think we're ever going to see the complex schemes that coaches like Belichick use. Parcells really likes to play a pretty simple style that whips you physically with no frills... Kind of like our offense in the 90s. There weren't a lot of tricks there, just basic plays executed to perfection by talented players.

I disagree there - Parcells strives to have a very complex 3-4 scheme. He's breaking it in here. And so far so good. Our only 5 minute melt down really was not on 3-4......

I agree, Lab. He wants to play physically dominating, punch you in the mouth defense, the kind that beats teams up, demoralizes them by halftime and makes them really glad when the game is done. But I also think we'll see more different and creative blitz packages as Ware and the rest of the linebackers get more comfortable with the defense. I think Burnett and Fujita are key.

I'd be curious if anyone could find the overall line breakdowns. The team actually played quite a bit of four man fronts I thought.

I need to rewatch it, but don't really want to. :)

I think once Fujita gets in the starting lineup and D Ware gets comfortable you will see a lot more plays stuffed in the backfield.

I really think this defense is going to very good by the midway point this season.

Gotta love that consistency.

The same unit that has gotten 6 of our 7 sacks, all 3 INTs, and the fumble recovery were on the field that 5 minutes.

Gee, who would have predicted that anything positive on defense you'd claim was because of the 3-4, any bad was another scheme?

BZ, that "scheme" is what lost the game fella...

Once we went to play zimmy WUSS ball we lost...

4 man D front, no guess work by the Oline...

Brunell knew NO pressure was coming quickly...

Ware was easily handled by Samuels...

No blitz...
No pressure, no win... :bang2:

3-4 Defense cranked all game! Stopped run, put Skins in 3rd and long. Two of the sacks were base 3-4. Three were 3rd and longs.

Once we went to passive 4-3 as Base in "prevent". It collapsed. No pressure and Safeties chasing WR's into the end zone.

Luckily Parcells changed up our defense base cuz that last 5 minutes illustrates why your Base 4-3 is a disaster.

Go 3-4 Base and shift 4-3 looks off it!

BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are going to crush SF - THe 4-3 wuss cover 2 era is now OVER! Hopefully NEVER to be used again.

Where are my hip waders, 'cause it just got deep in here?

We have had ONE sack in a base 3-4, that was by Canty.

The nickel is not 4-3, it's 4-2-5.

But when have the facts, ever been part of your schtick?

He has been whiffing on this all day and part of yesterday.

Apparently the team was playing a 4-3 cover 2 at the end of the game.

I broke down the sacks for him as well and suddenly another one appeared out of the base 3-4. The magical, mysterious second 3-4 sack that never happened.

2 of the 5, 3-4

The other 3 third and long - blitzes
Because the 3-4 forced the issue.

No, 1. Remember my post last night?

1 sack from the 3-4. O-N-E.

The rest were from nickel packages, not 3-4 base.

While it may be true that we're getting a lot of sacks from the nickel package, that doesn't mean that the 3-4 base didn't put the other team in 3rd and long to force the team to go to obvious passing which we counter with the nickel.

I agree. I am just countering claims that the 3-4 caused 5 sacks.

The most pressure, IMO, came from having 4 DL on the field. I still think having 4 DL is the best defense that Dallas can get on the field. Doesn't have to be a true 4-3 per se, but the talent lies on the DL.

There were some 4-3 over/under looks in the Skins game as well. Coleman, Glover, Ferguson and Ellis on the line with Ware and Fujita as OLBers that moved up on the line depending on the situation. I like that defense as well.

Bobby Fischer would go to extraordinary lengths to win, was very much a risk taker. I think the more apt comparison is Parcells and Smyslov, or perhaps Capablanca. Fischer is far more a Mike Martz.
