I don't know much about franchising players but how long does it usually take to expect the tender to be signed? And if he doesn't will he just hit the FA market as if we never tagged him?

It would be ideal if he would wait a few days into FA and we can check in on Mario.

Yes. It's too good for him to pass up. Afterall, he wants to stay in Dallas so it would be for at least one more year.

The Dallas Cowboys officially placed the franchise tag on potential free-agent linebacker Anthony Spencer, guaranteeing him $8.8 million for next season.
He is the third player in team history to receive the franchise tag, joining safety Ken Hamlin and tackle Flozell Adams. In both cases, the team eventually worked out contract extensions.
That's what Spencer's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, hopes will happen. Barnes said he plans to continue to talk to the Cowboys about a long-term deal.
The deadline to sign the franchise tag is July 16. If the sides don't sign a deal by then, Spencer will play the season under the $8.8 million tag.
Reaching a deal would certainly lower the salary-cap hit for the Cowboys, but at this point they are not that far along in the process and seemingly not ready to commit long-term to Spencer.

Ideally he waits, we sign Williams and kick his sorry arse to the curb. Maybe too much optimism, but I just force myself to come to terms with paying him $9 million next year.

He'd better, or else a lot of good angst will have been completely wasted.

Works in the favor of the Cowboys if they are serious about making a run at Mario Williams.

Posted as if the angst wasnt justified

You're an Aggie. We're used to it, whether it was justified or not.

Here's to hoping every pen in Dallas and at Valley Ranch disappears, and Spencer does the same.

Thisis the wya that i look at it. i of course could be flat wrong and this is just conjecture but it makes sense to me.

Anthony Spencer cannot like being franchised and he certainly could not like seeing the club go after who could very well be his replacement. He does not have to sign it until July but he can sign it at any point up til then. He could sign it out of spite or because he wants to play here at all costs.

I do not think he will because of money.

If he signs the tender he gets the $8.8m. I am sure that he would prefer even a less AAV but with multiple years and more guaranteed moeny. On the open market he can expect to get a multiple year deal that pushes $9m AAV and twice that ore more guaranteed. Kam Wimbley was overpaid but he got $10m AAV.

Hes going to want a shot of free agency and a long term deal. That only evaporates when other teams fill their needs at OLB and use up cap space. There is plenty of cash to go around and the only other OLB worth a flip is Wimbley.

Now maybe if the end of March arrives and the draft looms i could see pressure but in the meantime all he does is reduce his income potential by signing.

Call me crazy but I'm all about the fountain of youth.

You gotta keep your younger players around or were gonna end up signing make shift older guys who pinball around the league. Keeping Spencer is important and quite frankly really doesn't have much to do with Mario Williams or any top free agent we are after in my mind. He is franchised with a ONE YEAR DEAL... IT IS NOT HARD TO WORK AROUND A ONE YEAR DEAL when negotiating a contract. Mario Williams, Carl Nicks, Brandon Carr... all young free agents and I would love to have one of them and expect to have one of them. Give them a fat signing bonus, lower their salary for the first season, and crank it up the years Spencer is not on the books. Seems like a speed bump in the road to success to me; but I seem to be in the minority.

One more thing,

Spencer is underrated.

Of course he is going to sign the tender. Once he does his entire salary is guaranteed for the season once he signs on the dotted line -- even if they cut him.

He probably wont sign the tender. People keep saying he is going to run to the table and sign the franchise tag. If Spencer hit free agency he would get way more than 9 million guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't sign and we signed williams or another OLB and he walked.

How do you figure? Ever since we franchised him this board has annointed him one of the best 3-4 OLB in the league not named DeMarcus Ware or James Harrison. If he was in any way underrated he sure as hell isnt anymore.
