Spencer was 2 different players in college.

His Senior campaign was PHENOMENAL while his previous years were average.

Which Spencer is the real deal?

2004 33 tackles 9.5 tackles for loss 7.5 sacks 6 bb 3 ff
2005 23 tackles 7.5 tackles for loss 3 sacks 1 bb 3 ff
2006 93 tackles 26.5 tackles for loss 10.5 sacks 6 bb 5 ff

Is your point that he got better over his college career?

Young person is still growing and learning tremedously during college years. Also, to be fair, we need to know supporting help and anything else like a small injury he might have played through the fans don't know about possibly.

It should scare us more if he peaked his junior year then regressed.

2005: Suffered a hamstring strain in August camp … Played with the flu vs. Miami, Ohio (Sept. 9) … Suffered a hyper-extended knee vs. Notre Dame (Sept. 30) … Sprained his right foot vs. Wisconsin (Oct. 21) and wore a boot to protect the injury, missing the entire week of practice leading up to the Iowa contest … Left the Penn State (Oct. 28) and Michigan State (Nov. 4) games with leg cramps.

Can't find any injuries for 2006, HHHHHMMMMM.....

Oh, Im not being critical.

Im loving it.

Im just wondering if anyone has any info on what might have brought on such a drastic improvement.

Did he switch spots?
Did another starter leave before his senior season?
Did they play lesser teams?

Thats a MAJOR improvement unlike anything Ive seen before.

I did forget to mention his games played/started.

2004 12/12
2005 11/11
2006 14/14

Durable, too. :D

again Spectre, I think it just comes down to Spencer maturing and having some good coaches that have produced Shaun Phillips, Chike Okeafor, Akin Ayodele and others

Apparently, in his junior season, Purdue used a rotational DLine system, so he had less time.
I could be wrong but I think I heard that.

Good God, that is good enough for me. Welcome aboard Spencer. I read elsewere that he is a monster as far as strength goes...should be ready to play this year.

someone explained it in another thread.

apparently teams rushed on Purdue this past season almost twice as much as other teams so his numbers were inflated.

Still great numbers but I knew there had to be a reason.
No one improves that immensely/rapidly.

That doesn't quite answer your question. They could have run just as much against them in 05 and 04. I think you're question was answered, however, by Big Dakota. Spencer suffered a spate of minor injuries in 05 that limited his production. No biggie.

i was VERY critical for the most part of our draft last year but i honestly think this has been a Great draft so far because Spencer is a Great player and between him and Ware they will wreck havoc on opposing offenses for the next decade!!!

They can and they do. However, the NFL frowns on such usage.

Not saying this is the case, but man, that's incredible. 93 tackles from a DE position? Is that a typo? Is there something a college coach knows about that the NFL level should know? Just awesome.
