Typically, SB teams and organizations who can sustain years of being contenders have a GM, HC, and QB that are top 6-8ish as a group. Building and managing a roster, putting those players in the best position to succeed, and having one of the better players at the most important position must align in order to sustain high level success in this league.
This is not the NBA, players alone do not win much for any sustained period of time. Let’s take a look at the 3 previous iterations of GM, HC, QB:
*Real GM (obviously Jerry is always by title but there’s been a clear shift in who makes the calls and who rubber stamps them).

Real GM- Jerry
HC- Jason Garrett
QB- Tony Romo
Tenure- 2010ish-2013
GM fielded three straight 8-8 rosters from 2011 to 2013 with solid starting talent but weak depth and minimal contributions from decent to less than stellar overall drafts. HC did what he did best and we saw some of the most Garrett influenced football ever. The king of 8-8 reigned. Romo did what he could but similar to Dak, without a good coach and overall roster, he wasn’t going to be able to do much.
Real GM- Stephen
HC- Garrett
QB- Tony
Tenure- 2014-preseason 2016
The selection of Z.Martin in 2014 signified the start of a new era. Believe in it or not, the player acquisition steadied tremendously and there was a clear influence from Stephen Jones and Will McClay. Drafts could now be counted on to bring in contributors. GM improved during this era. HC, same guy with better rosters and a renewed emphasis on the running game. Romo was able to use the play action and his veteran intelligence to play like a wizard. Was 2nd in MVP voting that year.
Real GM- Stephen
HC- Garrett
QB- Dak
Tenure- 2016-2019
The steadying of the GM’s roster management was supposed to benefit the final years of Romo’s career, but his body couldn’t make it. Many of the main contributors on the team now were drafted during these years. Garrett, got refreshed a few times by youth and talent but went stale quickly. Dak has climbed his way to a top ten-ish QB with a big season in 2016 and very bright spots throughout 2018/19. Still improving and has the look of a future top 6-8 QB as early as next year.

With a look at the current GM, HC, QB combo; will this be the first year in some time where we have a top 6ish roster, coaching staff, and QB? If so, we’ll be able to compete for SB’s annually as those guys don’t go anywhere.
