Will start at LG.....when TSmith gets hurt, yes, when he gets hurt, the Cowboys will put in whoever wins the starting swing tackle slot .....should they fail monumentally, MAYBE we see Tyler at LT. But I think the Cowboys will try as much as possible not to destroy his confidence so soon. I think it is imperative the Cowboys sign a veteran T this offseason as insurance. You know, like a good neighbor.

Some mixed opinions on this or more like options, but has been discussed on here already to a degree. Depends on Tryon Smith as well and to his health.

But here are the mothership pundits response.
@darthseinfeld

It appears that Eatman has replaced Broaddus as the resident moron that has non-sensical opinions.

He is projecting Tyler to RT. All evidence points to that being a near-zero probability.

The Jones and coaches have made comments about Tyler being a 'left side' player.

The team obviously sees Steele as a starter at RT but they quickly pulled the plug on McGovern as a starter at LG last season.

My honest opinion Jazz is that we drafted Smith at 24 was because we had to have that top OL despite anything else, there was no other option.
I dont think TS cares what position he plays, guard or tackle.
Watch this mansquatch just define his role, he doesnt care.

I can see a situation here and there, if they are ahead in the 4th quarter, they pull Tyron for precautionary reasons, to give Tyler some reps at LT. If the game is pretty well decided at the time.

I posted several weeks before the draft that Tyler Smith is the only player that I've seen that reminds me of Larry Allen.

He has incredible power and an ease of movement rarely seen with 320+ pound players.

In college he could have his weight back on his heels or be completely off-balance, but somehow he still ended up pancaking the defender.

Obviously there are questions about his lack of developed technique.
My assessment:
1: College coaches are trying to win games, not develop players for the NFL.
- The players with limited talent are the ones that get the most coaching.
- The most physically talented players (not including QBs) often get the least attention from coaches relative to other starters.

2: His college OL coach was young and very inexperienced. He had been a grad assistant just a year or two before Tyler Smith's freshman year.

3: Many of his penalty issues in college were from being too aggressive.
- Some college coaches will never tell players to be less aggressive.
- Even in the 2020s, there is still an element of 'just bust 'em in the mouth' mentality in football.

If he had better technique in college or had played exclusively at OG, the Cowboys would not have been able to draft him at #24.

Tyler Smith was my favorite player in the 2022 draft.
  • It is rare that the Cowboys have ended up drafting my favorite player:
    • 2011: Tyron Smith (I was completely sold on him).
    • 2005: DeMarcus Ware
    • 2003: Jason Witten (I wanted to draft him late 1st and cussed Parcells for bypassing him in the 2nd).
  • Pollard was my favorite day 3 of the draft player in 2019.
  • Awuzie was my favorite 2nd round player in 2017. I actually wanted to draft him in the 1st instead of Taco.
  • On the downside, AOA was my favorite day 3 of the draft player in 2010...

His development tech will be in the form of overpowering defenders early, when he meets his match he will learn the need to refine at that point.
At least that's what I'm envisioning.

Nick has the best take, as is often the case.

They obviously hope Tyron stays healthy, and if so he plays LT.

But where would they rather have Tyler play while waiting to move to LT, LG or RT? I could see arguments either way.

McGovern is in competition with Steele for the last spot, and if they're even in the ballpark of each other, management's preference for Tyler's development will be the deciding factor.

I think they're planning on him being their LG. Philbin doesn't seem to have a high opinion on McGovern, so I have a hard time seeing him being our starting LG..

I bet the largest obstacle for this Coaching staff is to slow the bull down.

McGovern is our top reserve guard, behind Martin at RG, and provides great depth for once.

No telling how much better he is now, but last season they didn't seem to want him on the field. He got to play FB & did pretty good, but he didn't do too well once they finally put him on the Oline.
