Will Tyson Walter make the team?

If he does, will he be a possibility at right tackle? I thought he played RT a little two years ago and didn't really fall on his face but didn't really distinguish himself either. He's not that much different than Vollers is he? Size wise he is, but talent wise he isn't.

He makes the team because Bill likes him, and Tuna has, imo, focused so exclusively on Bledsoe's Achilles heel, getting blitzed up the middle, that any confidence a player can instill in Bill at center-guard will earn him a slot.

Matt Lehr was unable to, but Walter obviously has.

But he sure doesn't look like any option at tackle.

Let's see:

F. Adams / Vollers
L. Allen / Peterman
A. Johnson / Gurode
M. Rivera /
R. Petitti / Tucker

IMO that's the 9 players we keep there with Gurode being a swing C/G and Vollers being a Swing LT/RT

EDIT: I forgot Tucker. I think he makes it and could play T or G in a pinch.

It's possible with the uncertainty on the O line that Bill keeps 10. :suxiggle: :trophy: :iggles: :disseags:

It certainly is a possibility. I just think with some of the surprise players at other positions, and with Roger's going down for the season, 9 is most likely.

A 10th offensive linemen would likely keep someone like Tyson Thompson, "Pepper" Johnson, Jay Ratliff, or even Justin Beriault off the team. Plus, if you throw in that Vollers can play both tackle positions, Gurode can play C or G, Tucker can play T or G, and even Allen could be our RT in a pinch... that versatility can allow us to scoot someone like Noll to the practice squad and let us keep "Pepper" or someone who most likely wouldn't make it through waivers.

Pepper, Ratliff, Thompson... those guys have considerable upside while Tyson Walter and Ben Noll are going to be solid at best. I can't see cutting a potential very good player for either one of those OL.

I think he will. There is a VERY good chance he will because he will not clear waivers.

Agree, this was what I first thought also, glad I read a little further before responding. You do not cut a player at another position to keep a player because of uncertainty. If you are in that bad of shape, then cut the marginal OL, and go sign a known veteren, screw the salary cap for one year.

I don't think Walters is PS eligible.

I've never been impressed with him... I've seen him get blown up and plain swatted away way too many times... Let the younger ones develop and send the Big Whiffer on his way.

He may have a chance because Rogers got a boo boo and Ben Noll has been uninspiring. If he makes it he'd be the 10th guy and we may not keep 10 because of strength at other positions like DL and RB.

He would be severely helped by Tucker making a few more dumb mistakes and getting cut.

Nice post Asthma. I agree on all counts.

I feel a little like a Rashard Lee apologist, but I just love this "Pepper" guy and I'm trying to find any way possible for him to squeak onto the roster.:

I think people want so badly (myself included) to get talent for nothing, ie a good player as an undrafted free agent, that they grasp onto any of those guys who look like they might turn into something.

Pepper and Thompson are closer to that than any player we've had in a long, long time. Maybe one or both will actually turn out to be a true find... players who are not only starters but can make a real difference.

How great would that be? It would be like getting back the two first round picks we blew on Galloway. Or like not missing on Gurode and Bryant.

It's the kind of thing that can help pull a franchise back up out of mediocrity. Couple that with the apparent good late round drafting that has broken out at Valley ranch (Crayton, Petitti, Beriault, Canty, Ratliff) and we could make up some serious ground on the rest of the NFL... particularly if our early round success continues (Ware, Spears, Burnett).

I think Gurode's play at Center thsi offseason as definately won him a spot on the team. He may not be a very good guard, but he definately is a servicable backup. BP likes versatility at OL, and Gurode saved himself by showing it.

I think tomorrow night is a big night for Tyson, he has no excuses and has been around long enough to either begin to step up or out...
