Dallas story

Back in March, the Dallas Cowboys signed franchise legend and longtime tight end Jason Witten to a four-year contract extension. But it contained zero guaranteed money and therefore was an example of NFL salary-cap gymnastics and not an actual commitment.

And you wouldn't expect a long-term commitment to a tight end who's entering his age-35 season. Witten is aging and slowing, with his last 1,000-plus-yard receiving season now way back in 2012. He's at the point in his career when retirement questions are an annual staple of the locker clean-out process after the end of each season.

Soon enough the tight end torch will be passed in Dallas, and there are a handful of developmental options assembling behind Witten. That now includes Blake Jarwin, an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State.

Jarwin is a versatile pass-catcher who was used everywhere in college, and that experience alone makes him an asset. He lined up as an in-line tight end, from the slot, as an H-back and was also split out wide. Overall, his targets and opportunities were limited, but Jarwin still left for the draft with a per-catch average of 15 yards.

He has the speed to separate up the seam and the toughness to win jump balls amid chaos up the middle.

"Jarwin has the athleticism to be a matchup player in the pros," wrote Bleacher Report's Matt Miller in his scouting report. "He could easily play as a flex tight end or even a fullback in the right scheme. A tough player with a high work ethic, he has the tools to become a more prolific pass-catcher at the next level than he was in college."

If he can truly play fullback, this is interesting. If not, it could be a battle between him and Rico for a spot.

I think he will get his chance to make a case given the fact Hanna is not ready. Kid needs to make the most of this opportunities if he can do that he has a chance.

I'll answer your question with a question:

What do you get when you cross an elephant with a rhino?

Hanna has been with the team since 2012 and has 0 TD, I would not think his job is secured by any means.

I put that more on Romo than Hanna. Romo simply didn't want to throw to any TE but Witten. We had several solid to good TEs come and go during the Romo era who went to other teams and proved they were capable players. Hanna is considered a great blocker. I think they are very happy to have him back. I like Jarwin a lot but he isn't taking Hanna's spot. I'm thinking a year on the PS to develop and he may be a future versatile TE/FB who can free up a roster spot by playing more than one position. He could prove very valuable in a hurry up offense where he could line up at TE/WR on passing plays and FB on running plays.

I would say obviously his time in PS will be huge. If he can be reliable in blocking and also be effective at the H-back spot, he has a decent chance.

While Hanna isn't making bank, he is on a second contract, so if they can save some by releasing him and going with a cheaper, younger option I don't see why not.

True Romo will look for Witten yet Gavin Escobar had 8 TD. Granted Hanna is more of a blocker but then if a Jarwin can show himself as a quality blocker and more then he has a chance to win a job same with Rico. Geoff Swaim has shown himself as well as being a good blocker. I have nothing against Hanna but if all he brings to the table as a TE is he can block then I think he is at risk. His play just has not been that great to think his job is secure.

The why not is because Hanna is the much better player with experience who will greatly help the running game. Next year after being in the system then sure, it may make sense if Jarwin shows development.

Dude Hanna has been injured for most of his career. I bet he hasnt played a full season yet.

He's a good blocker.

Yes he is and again nothing personal against him nor do I have anything against Rico, Jarwin or Swaim. Their jobs are to go out and compete and if Hanna shows himself as better then great but I don't think is blocking alone is going to win him the job especially if these other guys can show the ability to block as well as being better weapons.

He could play another 3 years and may never catch more than 5 passes. His value is his superb blocking.

He did not play last season at all and did not effect the team at all. He was not missed. I agree he is a good blocker but him being here or not is not going to have a major effect on this team. Thus I think his job is up from grabs and if one of these other guys can show the ability to block and make plays in the offense then great. I have no individual pet cat I expect guys to go out and earn their job. Granted there are certain players who are a given that will be on the 53 I don't think Hanna is one of them who is ensured a spot. Heck JJ Watt has more receiving TD than Hanna and he is a DE only sees spot action on offense. lol

Yet they gave him a fairly nice 2nd contract. They love Hanna because he developed into a very good blocker. I suspect he could catch passes to if they let him run routes and had a QB that would look past Witten.
