Will Wade Phillips make our Secondary better?

I have seen alot of post about us getting a new Corner or a new Safety the last few days. I do not think that we need either.

Many many times last year our Secondary looked as if it was playing backyard football with noone allowed to rush the passer. ANY receiver in the NFL can get away from ANY Corner or Safety if they have more than 6 seconds to get seperation. The cause of most of our Secondary woes last year (and the year before that) was not Henry or Watkins or even Roy ....... it was the fact that opposing QB's had all day to throw.

IF Wade can give us a decent pass rush (something we have not had since 95-96) I believe the players we have could excel in this system .....

Remember how excited every one was last year when we picked up Pat Watkins? Remember how good Henry was in 2005? many people were saying he was our best CB before he got injured.

Its my opinion (and I am certain many of you will disagree) that the Wade 3-4's pass rush will finally fix all the glaring holes that the Saints game exposed and more importantly allow the aggresive players we drafted to play aggressively. It will not be perfect and we will still probably get beat on a few big plays ....... but I am ok with that as long as we are aggressive on D. The most dissapointing thing with the Parcells/Zimmer D was it was not aggressive .... yet we still gave up the big play.

Please Wade ...... put the Big D back in Dallas.

Now fire away ......

Just say NO to DB in the 1st round.

I think that's going to be my new sig line.

I agree but I still think we need another starting caliber CB on the roster. We're one injury from being screwed.

We need someone who can get to the QB. Canty, Spears and Fergs ain't getting it done and it is costing our DBs their reputations!!!!

I say get a nice big DT that can spell Fergs and take over when he's gone.

Or WR. If Dwayne Jarrett is there, TAKE HIM!!!

Well, it would be difficult to be much worse than they were last year, so by default, I think Phillips will make it better.

His system will put tremendous pressure on our secondary though. It's gonna be time for our corners to really earn their money. I think the drafting a DB notion comes from the simple fact that Glenn is old, Henry is aging, and has nagging injuries, and Newman might not be around after his initial contract is up. Just preparation for the future, same as at WR.

Yeah, I think our DBs will look worse at times. When you blitz as much as Wade does, the blitzing LBs, freed-up DEs, and and even safties at times will look good getting to the QB. But our CBs are going to be manned up more often, and that means some long completions. So they might look worse from time to time.

But who cares... It'll still be worth it to put offenses on their heels, get some hits on the QB, and not have Jon Fricking Kitna ridicule our simple schemes any longer.

But the good thing is that the QB will not have near as much time to throw as they have the past 2 years .....

I will never forget that completion from Mcnabb to T.O. 2 years ago ...... Mcnabb had all day to throw .....

I have never been as disgusted with the team as I was that day.

I think are Secondary can cover anyone for a few seconds ..... and I think a few seconds is all Wade is gonna give the opposing Qb's

EXACTLY!!!! We have only TWO starting caliber CB's on this roster. Aaron Glenn is too old to handle being an every down CB and thrown into a starting role.

This is exactly why I like Aaron Ross so much... he's a starting caliber CB that, unless we suffer an injury to Newman or Henry, we won't be FORCED to throw into a starting role as a rookie but he can contribute quite a bit by returning punts and getting playing time anytime our starters need a break.

Glenn and Henry are getting old... we need a young, talented CB to start getting prepared to be our starter in 2008.

Actually I like CB Darrelle Revis better then Ross not only because of his skills but also because he can be used as a punt returner. I feel we must take a CB like Revis in the first round since Glenn is 35 and Henry turns 31. Get a good CB now rather then wait til next year and force that player to start immediately.

I do believe Phillips 34 will be much more aggressive. Frankly I thought when Parcells went to his 34 that we would be getting a Pittsburgh-style defense. Well our defense certainly hasn't been aggressive although against the Colts they at least called a few stunts. Phillips defense may not solve all our problems but I think he's more creative in solving some of them; we should find out this year which of our players can really get the job done and which aren't performing as we had hoped.

The bulk of the pass rush in the 3-4 comes from the LBs.

The bulk of our pass defense the past few years under Parcells has been in the 4-2-5 and Fergy, Canty and Spears were rarely used.

So I fail to see your point.;)

He obviously doesn't understand the difference between the Parcells 3-4 and the Phillips 3-4.

Actually i would say our safeties being out of position and slow to recognize plays develop and Henry being hurt and thus losing a step were the biggest problems. Pass rush or not that is inexcusable.

Henry can heal but Bowles is still the secondary coach. Hopefully Phillips does something to help him out.

no but the safty play sure as heck was. If i hear anyone say that Watkins actually played well in the second half again Im just oignt o laugh. the more film i see the more i realize that he wsa late to react as a play developed and when the play came at him.

He was so bad with Williams in the box and him in centerfield last year that thy never let him do it again after he came back form the bench.

Williams was not quite as bad but looked slow to react all to often as well and Davis is just not cut for the free safety position. He doesnt have the speed or instincts to get it done.
