and if we DO (fingers crossed) how much salary cap relief will it provide? Enough to pursue Winston or Clabo?

I think the Escobar pick may have sealed Vickers fate, so how much would cutting him save?

We will give Free the option of taking a pay cut.

Free's base salary is 7 million this year. You probably want to save at least 5-6 million on Free's contract in a pay cut.

Cutting free on the other hand (after June 1st) should save us about 5 million this year, and then 6 million next year.

If the Cowboys are offering him the chance to take a pay cut, either they are trying to use his cap savings early to replace him, or are at least willing to let him compete for a back up spot.

But I think we're kidding ourselves if we don't think we're going to sign a free agent somewhere on the line. I just hope they aren't too enamored with Parnell starting, and just saving the money.

Cutting Lawrence Vickers saves 1.2 million against the cap.

When you combine cutting Vickers and cutting/renegotiating Free's contract, I say we could easily afford two free agent offensive linemen.

I think the biggest question is are they more interested in their options at guard that are on the current roster. I know they don't want to get older here. That is why they didn't resign Holland.

We are currently almost $5M under the cap so we have money to sign someone. Cutting Free as a June 1 cut would be enough to pay the draft picks.

I think the issue with signing a free agent is we probably want a one year deal but the players want more years and as much money as possible. I don't think we cut Free unless we have a replacement in hand.

We have to get rid of Free. Especially with no TEs that are very good at blocking.

I'm still uncertain about Free. I am convinced Parnell can be better. He's bigger, stronger, more mobile and has better feet. But he would play well for a number of snaps then he'd just get schooled and whiff on a block. That's why he had less pressures per snap and more sacks per snap than the other two.

I don't know what is out there on the FA market. Yes, I know their names but I don't know how they are playing. If they are certain they can get someone in here at 3-4+mil/yr at OT and they can elevate the play there then they absolutely cut Free based on salary/performance. If they aren't sure then they will consider paying Free that kind of money. He's not going to play at vet minimum but he may have to take average to a little less to play here. We just can't know what they think about both Free and Parnell no matter the opinions here.

The fact they are even interested in negotiating with Free tells me something about how they feel about him. But Jerry is not above using the media to get leverage against both Free and FA X(s) in negotiations.

I'm even more uncertain about the two FA G acquistions last year and what's behind them. My guess is they both could have the ax fall although I suspect they will get a chance to compete for their jobs. I'm hoping Costa is good enough to start along with Frederick. Let the best C play there. I wouldn't be surprised to either have a FA G come in or to have one of the unknowns on the roster step up and get some snaps.

There are just too many variables and unknowns for us to have a good guess beyond Smith and Frederick right now. I guess we'll see in the next few what's up.
