Will we have a top 5 defense next year?

I can really see this team having a elite defense next season top 5. The only postion we are weak at is SS but you never know roy can get back to his old form. Other than that we are great or good at almost every starting postion and have depth if we get pacman and thomas stats healthy this defense can be great. Even though we got new coaches i can seriously see this year having one of the best defenses in the nfl my prediction #4 YPGA. Your thoughts?

Another year in phillips system we should be. pacman and newman would be the best tandom. We have a top 5 front 7 defense, very good at getting to the qb and a pro bowler at safety and good depth in all areas (22 and 28 remember). if we stay healthy no doubt this team will have a great defense not good but great.:)

Yards allowed per game is a faulty stat, especially when you have a top notch offense that scores a lot because the opposing team will get more opportunities to get yards. Dallas finished 7th in yards allowed per play, a much better stat when it comes to deciphering the quality of a defense.

Either way, Dallas has to improve in the points they allow as they somehow finished 13th in points allowed despite being quite good in most of the major defensive stats.

I would tend to think that the defense would get better in its second year under Phillips, but history has shown that Phillips' defenses tend to plateau in year two after greatly improving in year one. It's year three that they usually tend to become the cream of the crop.

Still, if Dallas stays reasonably healthy and does get Pacman and Zach Thomas can play healthy, they should be a tough defense to beat. I'd actually be more concerned about the LOLB position with Ellis than Roy as SS because Ellis is weak against the run and in pass coverage. Hopefully Spencer is good enough of a pass rusher to start for Wade in 2008 because he was pretty good in coverage and run defense as far as 3-4 OLB's go last season.

It's way too early to predict our defense. We are glaringly thin at corner. Pacman isn't here yet....and he hasn't been reinstated. We got 16(?) games out of our two starters last season and they weren't healthy even then. Will our pass rush get better? How many times will Demarcus Ware be robbed on offsides penalties? Too early to tell IMO.

has any team been #1 in

rushing defense
passing defense
total defense
scoring defense

and if so where did they rank in

rushing offense
passing offense
total offense
scoring offense

and if the defense was 1st in all those categories, where did it rank in

sacks
turnovers

If #38 plays to his potential we will have the #1 defense in the league.

If not then we will just be really good.

if #38 plays like the pre-Kelly Rowland #31, we might be seeing the ambulance on the field quite a bit.

i agree, if fatboy plays up to his potential he changes everything. I doubt it happens:eek:: but I'm hoping it does happen:)

We can be top 5 if

1. We can stay healthy (e.g., Henry, Z Thomas)
2. The Secondary is sorted. Remember, even with PacMan, he hasn't played in a while, and we need RW to return to his old self.

What we have going in our favor is that we definitely have the talent (assuming we do sign PacMan), and we will be in the same scheme for 2 consecutive years (and that should be a big plus).

Why are calling that loser a fatboy? That's mean.:D But, I really do hope Roy can step it up this year. If he plays well, and this being the 2nd year under Wade, I can really see our defense becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The Cowboys play in a pretty tough division and the upcoming schedule is going isn't going to be a cake-walk.

A top-5 defense is reachable given the talent, but it's going to be hard to achieve.

That being said, I would think that if this team does have a top-5 defense, then you can order your SB tickets right now.

This defense has the potential to be one of the best in the league. The passing defense definitely wasn't the greatest last season, but we still managed to win 13 games without our secondary being completely healthy throughout. Newman and Henry missed significant time and we had Reeves filling in.Also Watkins got banged up towards the end and that put more pressure on our already-injury laden secondary. If we sign Pacman and draft a CB in the first round, we will be in very good shape.

If Pacman hasn't lost a step, he will start alongside Newman, which will allow Henry to play the Nickle CB spot and maybe even some FS. Henry, when healthy, is very good at making plays on the ball. With him and Pacman on the field, we should see more turnovers.

Assuming everyone stays healthy, we will have flexibility to sub different coverage packages for different situations.

It is possible if we acquire Pacman and he picks up where he left off with the Titans (pushing Henry to the bench as nickel corner), Roy Williams is rejuvenated by Campo and if we have minimal injuries.

Another key will be Spencer stepping up this year. Would love to a pass rush unit of Ware, Ratliff, Ellis and Spencer in the nickel defense.

Sure, we'll have a top 5 Defense. All the way up to December, before it all goes in the crapper yet again.
