The way I see it, he would be an asset, however slight. Barron is no more than a liability.
If we had the luxury of foresight, I agree, I would much rather have Carp at this point. I just don't think the coaching staff could have predicted (along with the rest of us) that neither Sean Lee or Jason Williams would not be ready to fill that role.
When the trade was made I liked our side of the deal mostly. We received a backup swing-tackle with 70+ games of starting experience (however inept those starts may have been...). And for that reason alone, I still like the trade.
Folks might not want to acknowledge it, but outside of the penalties, Barron was pretty decent. Now I know that's a bit like saying the Elephant Man was pretty handsome dude without the deformities, but I think you get the idea.
We really are giving Carp faint praise here. Remember, this is the same guy who lacked any requisite tenacity, aggression and instincts for the linebacking position and has essentially been released by two NFL teams. He was a decent (not even "good," IMO) special teamer. Basically, what we're saying is that we miss his ability to run alongside a TE, lol.
Having said all that, I guess what I'm saying is that I don't blame the organization for trading away Carpenter.
