SAN ANTONIO - Cowboys second-round inside linebacker Sean Lee (strained quad) is likely to return to practice Wednesday afternoon, according to head coach Wade Phillips. His competition at nickel linebacker, second-year veteran Jason Williams, has been trying to capitalize on extra reps created by Lee's week-long absence.

Prior to Lee's injury on July 27, Lee and Williams had split first-team practice reps when weak-side starter Keith Brooking rested as a post-knee scope precaution. For the last eight practice days, Williams has been Brooking's sole replacement next to Bradie James during those rest periods.

Phillips says Williams' development at Brooking's "Mo" spot is still a work in progress - he was strictly a rush and run-stopping outside linebacker in Western Illinois' modified 3-3-5 scheme - but his recognition has improved from last year....

This really isn't a ringing endorsement is it. Prior to Lee going down, Williams was not keeping up. We'll see what Lee brings to the position now that he is back.

He has been receiving increased reps in practice and play on Sunday. He'll get a lot of game tape as well. He's still rough and we'll see his raw talent levels at least.

I don't mind Jason Williams taking another year or so to "get it", but the guy has got to come through on special teams this year. For a guy with his athletic ability, he should at least shine on special teams...last year he was lousy.

If the guy can't make plays on special teams, I doubt he's going to pan out at LB.

Something I don't understand is why they aren't letting Jason Williams rush the passer more. That is what he did in college and that is really where he excels. He reminds me of a young James Harrison from Pittsburgh. When Harrison played for Baltimore they tried him at different positions and ultimately, he never panned out. When he got to Pittsburgh he had one assignment, get to the Quarterback. To this day, Harrison is still a liability in coverage and will never be great in that area. However, he is one of the most feared pass rushers in the game. Maybe Williams is just out of position. Let him use his tremendous athletic ability and get to the Quarterback.

Well, it can only serve to make Williams better when he hits the field. He may be a drop off from Lee, but with more practice, that drop off will get smaller and smaller, unless Lee takes off like a rocket and widens the gap, but thats another problem for another thread. Only good things can come of Williams seizing the day and positively getting his name in the paper.
