Willie Mays has died

Saw him play for the Mets in Shea Stadium in 1972. I have a Super 8 movie I took of him playing that day.

Seems like he was the last of the slugger greats from those 40’s-60’s classics. Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Duke Snider, Frank Robinson, Eddie Matthews, Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, Harmon Killebrew, Joe DiMaggio, all gone. Back when baseball meant something. It will never again achieve that.

My memory of the guy though was from baseball card conventions as a kid. Apparently had a rep as a big league a-hole at the signings. Never met him though but read and heard plenty of stories that didn’t paint a nice picture.

Willie had all the tools. Hit and hit with power speed and defense . Possibly the best all around player to ever play MLB
