against every team in the division.

Head to head against Giants

Div record against Eagles and Commanders who would both have 3 division losses and we can only have at most two if we win on Sunday.

Yep, I think you are right. These tie breakers have played a role in a number of seedings in the last few years. Always important to take care of your own business.

I can never remember the exact order, but I think Divisional record comes before Conference record then Head to head, then record against same foes.

This is a home game, against a banged up divisional rival. Division games are always dangerous. Take care of this game, and the Packers game becomes the only super important game left I think. Don't want to play in Green Bay come January. We want home field and a bye, despite being great road warriors lately.

I have a good feeling about this team. They need to get over the hump and have a good late November and winning December though. Got to finish the year strong. The good thing is I think the coaching style and the return of some injured players and the development of the younger players means that this team is still capable of getting better. Focus and execution will be the key.

This is a big game from the perspective of sealing the division though and the Skins are ripe for picking!

For divisional opponents, it is head to head and then division, then conference

for non divisional, it is head to head, then conference.

We missed the playoffs in 2005 because Washington had the tie breaker on us. Last year, we lost the division because the Eagles had the tie breaker on us. Yeah I know we finished behind them in the standings but that was because our last games each year were meaningless because we knew the tie breaker had us.

I think the tie breaker depends on if you are determining the winner of the division or determine the tie breaker for the conference.

Who cares about tiebreakers, no one will be able to match us with a 15-1 record. :D

The Superbowl will be between teams with a combined loss of 2 (Pats aren't going undeafeted). Talk about league parity.

Heheheh, good one.

Remember though, on this board, you aren't allowed to look past the next step. Ergo, get the tie breaker first, then move on to finishing ahead ;)

NFL Tiebreaking Procedures
(March 20, 2002) -- With the NFL realigning into eight four-team divisions to accommodate the arrival of the Houston Texans, the league adopted new tiebreaking rules.
Common opponents will now be the third tiebreaker within a division after head-to-head games and division record because each of the four teams will have 14 common games in the 16-game schedule. The owners also moved the strength-of-victory tiebreaker ahead of the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker.
The six postseason participants from each conference will now be seeded as follows:
1. The division champion with the best record.
2. The division champion with the second-best record.
3. The division champion with the third-best record.
4. The division champion with the fourth-best record.
5. The Wild Card club with the best record.
6. The Wild Card club with the second-best record.

The following procedures will be used to break standings ties for postseason playoffs and to determine regular-season schedules.
NOTE: Tie games count as one-half win and one-half loss for both clubs.
TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION
If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Clubs
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

Thanks, that clears it up

Forgot about the Head to Head, which is important if the records are tied. So if Washington beat us twice and ended up with same record......

Means we have to beat them once and take care of our own business in doing so. Not that I expect Washington to take off, I think they are going to finish mediocre or poorly, it's just that Dallas hasn't proven anything in late Nov/December the last 4 years. I think our team is different and over the hump, but until they prove it, I'm still a tad cynical.

Time to destroy a beat up Washington squad at home.

Exactly. Win the next two and we have our ten wins which would almost all but guarantee us a playoff berth. Our magic number for the division would then be no worse than three. With our December schedule (including the Green Bay game), I can easily see us winning three of the last five.

Philadelphia at home, Carolina on the road and Detroit on the road. Should be wins. We should also take care of Green Bay.

Dallas is more ambitious than a division title, it is just a little gravy along the way, homefield is the true goal which means the NFC East Crown comes along the way.

I agree my young padawan but remember the rule on this board, is one step at a time.

First tie breaker, then division, then bye, then homefield.

I like the way you think; though you're from Canada.
