Things change fast in the NFL. Just a year and a half ago, after good early round drafting we had a real nice group of really good starters on their rookie deals. Now either those rookie year players will either leave in FA or are resigned to their second deals (most at big $). As we have seen, this is typically not the recipe to win in the NFL. Your high contract players may still be productive, but they very rarely match the $ tied to their contract. We have seen this in Dallas where we count star players to their contracts, even if their play does not match that level of play.

While looking at our young prospects we only have two that I see as above average starters in Gallop and LVE (LVE has not been good this year but was excellent last year) on rookie contracts. After that the young talent is thin. Maybe some will prove their worth as above average starters but the pickings are slim.

The good thing is the NFL changes fast, but we really need to hit on our next two drafts to fill our gaps with young talent. I don't think we can do it in one offseason, but two good drafts will change things.

In the meantime, we need the organization and coaching staff to really improve the bottom of the roster. with that hopefully they focus on special teams. In a league where most games are decided by a touchdown or less, you cannot consistently get beat in special teams. Maybe this is coaching, but I also think it is a talent issue or the inability of the scouting staff to find good special team players.

I think the next several drafts have to focus on defense, defense, and more defense. Especially true if as expected the Cowboys spend a huge amount of their cap dollars to retain Prescott and Cooper. That would mean that nearly all of the cap dollars are being spent on offense - save for Demarcus Lawrence. And it also clearly shows that while most of the offense is set, the defense still has some big needs.

Looking at it objectively, you're right. Age and injuries across the overpaid offensive line, combined with everyone being paid like they're keeping together a Super Bowl franchise doesn't bode well for the immediate future.

Not sure about the rest but I especially liked your last paragraph’s emphasis on special teams. AND Especially after watching New England, even in a loss yesterday and their special teams unit blocking another punt. 9 total NFL blocked punts this year and 4 by New England.
The Cowboy punt and kick coverage teams seem to allow the worst return yardage in the league it seems while can’t return one to save their life. While allowing the worst Starting opponent field position, the Cowboys average starting field position has got to be at the bottom of the league.

Our punter got his blocked in the New England game but he has been decent to very good in previous years so I’m straddling the fence on him.
The kicker is the worst I can remember Dallas ever having. He should be immediately cut.
Offense, Defense and Special Teams...If you suck at any one of them you probably aren’t that good.

Just another vital detail this staff has failed miserably at this year, the importance of Special Teams play. Just a horrible fail.

I agree. Especially with a regressing RB, an offensive line that continues to grow old and injured, and a QB and WR that are great-good, but not elite. The window gets smaller every year.

Thank you.

I kkow people are emotional basket cases around here, but the Cowboys are still one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Stop it.

Eh. Our RB is regressing by the day. Our QB is good at best. Our defense not only needs a new coordinator and scheme, but a few new players as well. By the time all of this comes together, our offense will be old and fallen apart. There's too many variables that need to be fixed right now, and by the time those are fixed, something else will fall apart.

The group has already been infected with the try-hard is good enough disease. Will take a new coach a few years to churn the roster.

Well they are not going to win it all this year. And when you factor in a new headcoach and 30 contracts ending after this year...Who knows what this team will look like next year.

Change is inevitable. Let's just hope things change for the better.

The whole idea of a window in today's NFL is flawed. Team change dramatically from year to year. You have to be flexible and adaptable and make new windows all the time. This is one of the issues with this team as a whole. Do you think the Patriots think about having a window? IMHO the only thing that qualifies s a window is getting good QB play on a rookie deal. To that end I would say we are smack dab in the middle of a very good window that is about to get slammed shut.

I agree with this and things can change quick and also agree about being flexibile and adaptable to make new windows.

I just think the Cowboys are in a rough spot moving forward. Most of their best players are on their second contracts and being paid like pro bowlers and there is very little "A "talent on rookie deals. That is a tough place to be to make a run over the next two years. It is not as bad as some of our earlier teams 10-15 years ago, but it is a position you don't want to get stuck in.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Defense needs work. Our once elite Oline is getting old and overpaid. Draft the next few years will be important.

It’s hard for me to say how bad we are cause I kinda feel like the scheme and also the atmosphere that comes with the coaching is an open wound. We need Mr. Clean and that pine sol lady to come in and lead this franchise!

When I become GM we will:

Hire a ball busting real deal headcoach.

Hire a modern day defensive coordinator.

Fire our special teams joke.

Trade for Jamal Adams

Sign a DT

Draft another couple DTS, DBs and LBs.

Yes heavy defense this offseason. I dont think we are as bad as we played but we need some run stuffers to both stop the run and keep our LBs clean.

If I was the GM, I’d go back in time and TJ watt instead of Charlotte and that safety we should have drafted...Landon Collins
