It's about the HBO TV series being made with them.

OMG I hear ya. It was supposed to be out in 2008. He did this with Feast for Crows, but not nearly as bad as he's been delaying Dance.

There is nothing overrated about ASoIaF. Such a terrific series.

As for writing the next book, Martin has completed a ton of other projects since A Feast for Crows came out. This series is not the only thing he works on, which is why it's taking so long. I can't wait until A Dance with Dragons comes out, but it's not like he's just taking his time and not doing anything.

Ya, I know he is doing other things and I'm sure he is working a lot on the series. However, since this will probably be his magnum opus as it were, you would think he could make a little more time for it and not piss off his fans. Not too mention, he's getting up there in age. Would hate for him to die before he finishes the series. LOL

And you are right, nothing overrated about this series. However, I didn't like the way he chose to do the last book, leaving out serveral main storylines. And the next book will have them and leave out others.

Martin actually addressed those two things on his website, basically saying to his fans that this series is not the only thing he does. In fact, he's more into his sci-fi, it just happens this series became the most popular. He also poked fun at people who say he's fat and old and is going to die before he finishes. I myself have had that concern, lol. I surely hope he gets to finish it.

A Feast for Crows and a Dance with Dragons is basically one big book, it just turned out to be too big for only one, that's why each one is basically half the characters only. The last two books will be the traditional all characters stuff we're used to, at least assuming they don't run too long on him as well. =)

Well in my honest fantasy reader opinion it is overrated.

Jons story is by far the best. Its interesting dark and just cool. So while im reading the other characters chapters I am always looking forward to Jons. That right there is a problem. The second coolest chapters are the women and her dragons, only because there are dragons coming back. OH, and I suppose when the sister was escaping from being married and beaten by the "evil" queen was alright.

I have read the first two and like half of the third one. I just feel like so much could be cut out for whats really going on. Or something like that, cant quite put my finger on it. Its just really average.

I gave a buddy of mine the book to see if another fantasy reader would like it and he couldnt get past the first 100 pages.

What kind of fantasy books do you like?

A Song of Ice and Fire is by far the best series I've ever read.

Here a few that Ive read. Some of these were in my early teenage years.

All of the Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore

The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas under Red Skies by Scott Lynch

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

The first and Second Wheel of time books by Robert Jordan

The Blade itself Trilogy (not great, but entertaining) Joe Abercrombie

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Etc, these are the first few that come to mind

A Song of Ice and Fire is definitely not a fantasy series for people who like the high magic high adventure fantasy of say Salvatore. I myself enjoy both, but they're very different animals.

Martin's story is about betrayal and political intrigue more than it is about magic and wonderment. Just because you like Jon Snow's story and not the other's doesn't make the others bad. That's just what you like. I enjoy reading basically every character in the series for different reasons.

Probably the best fantasy book I've ever read was "The Legend of Huma" (Dragonlance: Heros, volume 1) by Richard A Knaak. If you like any of the books in the Drizzt series, this one book is better than any of them. He has a lot of good books, but LoH is the best. Moon of the Spider (Diablo) is awesome too.

I really enjoy almost any of the Warcraft / World of Warcraft books too. No, I do not nor have I ever played World of Warcraft. (MMORPG consume way to much time) Although I have played the original Warcraft games. (good stuff)

Yeah. Martin's books are more "real" than any of the other fantasy I have read. There are no really clear cut good/bad guys. Everything is gray, like real life. They are also far more intricate.

The simple fact that there is a feeling of no character being safe from death makes it the best series I've ever read.

Ya i get that. I wanted to like Martins series. I just always felt like i was reading a whole lot of nothing. And then something cool or interesting would happen, then more nothing. To each their own though ofcourse.

Ill look into the Dragonlance book. Im reading "The Warded Man," right now though.

My favorite fantasy book is far and away The Name of the Wind.

Since we're now using this thread to also discuss other fantasy series, Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series is another very good one, though much of the first book is introducing a LOT of different characters, so that first book mostly feels slow to develop. It's totally worth it to stick with it though.

That one is on my list along with some Robin Hobb stuff to read next.
