You can tell the rules committee is really lacking in people that actually played football. It's pretty clear to anyone. They make the dumbest adjustments and the dumbest rules.
I think these are guys who did though I could be wrong. Seems like they want to dumb the game down. Guys who didn’t play the game don’t seem to take that route.

I wonder if this is because of where the teams (and kicker) have to line up for regular kickoffs. That doesn't appear to be conducive to onside kicks. Most likely on onside kicks, the teams will line up more like they would have before the new kickoff rule. Thus the need to announce the onside kick intention. I had kind of wondered how they would do them with the kicker standing all the way back by his lonesome to kick off.

Was there an explicit reason given as to why this was changed? I would love to hear the logic behind this

They have to put up the front that they are doing all they can for player safety for when the lawsuits hit.

I really never saw how there’s supposedly many more injuries on that play than others.

They can’t eliminate the play because the term “kickoff” means much more, but I suspect we will see the day when there’s only two per game to start each half, and most are touchbacks. After scores, the other team simply takes the ball at the 25.

I have no problem with eliminating the onside kick. Some goofy bounce shouldn’t offset being outplayed all day.

I'm not a fan of these changes. I wish they would stop trying to fix things that aren't broke. This reeks of some pointy headed suit trying to justify their existence.

At this point they should just get rid of kick offs, heck get rid of punting as well

These rules seem kind of pointless

Most teams don't onside before the 4th quarter
Most teams don't onside unless they're losing
And you pretty much know when they're going to onside kick

It will take away from some of those surprise onside kicks, but they were just so incredibly rare it's not worth lamenting

They've done everything they can within the rules for safety. They didn't need to start eliminating plays. Doing all they can for player safety would be to remove tackling altogether.

I hate all 3 of those rules. They all take away from the game. Especially announcing the intention to kick an on side kick.
I think most trickery is cheap in sports.

Ultimately 'survival' is a lame excuse for survival.

Just like in soccer...the crazy theatrics soccer players are allowed to do before kicking a penalty kick or shoot out kick is so so disadvantageous to the goalie. The kicker has such an advantage over the goal keeper its not even funny. Its not stimulating to watch.

Im not even a fan of extra points, FG's. Too many stupid factors that can allow weird outcomes that shouldnt be.

All sports should be as stimulating as possible for the players, coaches...and fans.

I cant stand playing basketball at the local recreation center and players want to stack teams unfairly. No one wants to play basketball, first to 15 points, when one team goes up 8-1....the losing team stops playing.

Im not a fan of having multiple avenues for trickery in any sport. Not a fan of it during special teams in football. I would prefer to just eliminate special teams in football.

Cut down on injuries..players are expensive. Don't like the rules, but I get it.
Exactley how many players were being injured during on-side kicks? Not meant for you, I know that the NFL auto response to any rule changes, - player safety - but come on man, they already took most of the heavy contact away with no more than 5 players on one side and have to be within a yard of the ball so no running starts or overloads.

I already don't watch any games other than the Cowboys and with how I feel about the Cowboys this year, a lot of my Sundays will be free. Sad what they are doing to this league as a whole.

You couldn’t have the change without banning them since cover team couldn’t recover the ball
90 percent of the posts on this thread don’t know about the new kickoff rules.
Under the new rules the return blockers and the kickoff team cannot move until the ball has been caught by the returner.
Therefore a team must inform it plans to kick an onside kick or it can’t physically take place. Nobody could run down field to pounce on it

I'll still watch as many games as I can. I enjoy football...
