With a fifth-round draft pick and a player in general manager's Mike Reinfeldt's pocket, the Titans are now poised to get a top receiver from the Cowboys via NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's preliminary approval on the Pacman Jones-to-Dallas deal.
Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has finally dumped this albatross, so it's time to move forward in getting what the team really needs.
Before we all lose our heads, getting T.O. isn't going to happen; that would be April Fool's fodder. And landing Terry Glenn would be foolish. After all, he did miss nearly all of last season with a knee injury, and he's not exactly young.
Nevertheless, the Titans need a solid, reliable NFL receiver, and the Cowboys' Patrick Crayton fits the bill nicely.
It's Crayton's stats, which have improved each season during his four-year career, that make the 28-year-old very desirable.
He's played in an increasing number of games (except last season, when a sprained ankle kept him out in Week 12), and his number of catches, yards and touchdowns have gone up each year. That's indicative of a player who's increasingly earning the trust of his quarterback and coaches.
Crayton only caught 50 passes for under 700 yards and seven scores last season, but he's also playing in Owens' shadow. Only Randy Moss or Chad Johnson has the proven talent to steal more action from Owens. Crayton may also be pushed further down the depth chart if Michael Irvin is allowed to return to Dallas. However, with Crayton's track record of annual improvement, along with his young age, he looks to be a player on the rise and Tennessee should zero in on him as quarterback Vince Young's go-to guy.
