I posted this question in another thread..just looking for a quick answer without having to start another Mays thread..bc there have been so many..

can someone please explain the following for me? How was Taylor Mays such a highly touted prospect after the 2008 season (considered the best safety in the country and a bonafide top 10 pick) and has changed to a guy many are now calling a likely bust at safety? The biggest ARGUMENT I hear against Mays is that he does not MAKE enough plays and never did make plays at USC..However, if he never made plays, how was he ever considered a top 10 pick? Because, he absolutely was considered a stud prior to this past year.

Let me make this clear, I am not for or against Taylor Mays, I just want to better understand. Thanks.

It's weird isn't it? I never understood that either. He put up better numbers this year too, so it's a little sketchy. Last year he was a lock to go to Oakland.

I agree and I disagree. I agree in that the RW comparisons are just stupid. RW was a stud early on and put up some good numbers. He just fell off, like you said they see a similar playing style and they automatically assume RW 2.0. RW was a decent in coverage the first couple years. I disagree in that I get the notion that you like Mays. I think he'll never be the player RW was, and he can't cover a thing. Would you feel comfortable plugging him in for Hamlin, as a centerfielder type FS?

Honestly? Yes. He'll be able to cover a hell of a lot more ground at FS. I actually think FS is his best position despite many labeling him a SS. He's just too bulky to be able to turn and run in tight coverage, which SS will ask him to do with TEs. His game is better suited to patrolling in a zone where he can read and react to a play, and use his tremendous speed and closing burst. And despite his shortcomings as a tackler as a Senior, he'd be no worse as the last line of defense than Ken Hamlin.

It's funny though, that Roy Williams was at his best when he was lining up at FS with Darren Woodson at strong.

Actually, if we got Pouncey, then we could START him at either guard or center. If at center, than Gurode moves over to Kosier's spot. This potential shift has been discussed for quite a few years now.

sorry there's no way he beats out either Kosier or Gurode

I agree. I really think Pouncey is the most "NFL ready" offensive linemen. Plug him in the interior (whether it's center or guard) for the next ten years.

LOL

but I think he will be gone before Iupati

I think either Pitts or Philly take him

leaving us with that with that samoan beast Iupati

if Iupati is gone I trade down an get a extra 2

I agree that his best position would be at FS, but just looking at some video he really scares me. Theres a lot of potential there, but just some of his game tape is brutal. Maybe Campo could coach him up. I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it, if he's the highest rated guy then go for it.

Why does no one remember Gurode has already played guard for Dallas and was average at best? Why does everyone seem to forget Gurode is a Pro Bowl center. Sure he has faults, but he's a top player at where he is.

What is everyone's obsession with moving Pro Bowl players positions?!

Ratliff to DE? Gurode to LG?

These players are Pro Bowlers. They are both top 5 in the NFL at their positions. Why would you move them?

That's like being the best sales person and your job and getting moved to accounting because your company doesn't wanna actively search for an accountant and another pretty good sales person fell into their lap.

He also felt like Dallas will take the best player there and thats why they are doing their homework on guys like Dez Bryant.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Before reading this I was gonna say we will probably trade down. Personally I'm hoping for best O-line available or Kyle Wilson...

I can see us taking Dez. You can trade Crayton to Miami along w/ Carpenter for a 4 or 5. Then in 2011 if/when you have to cut RW11 you are prepared and have Miles and Dez.

Plus he can return kicks and punts.

BTW I think our FS is already on the roster.

Mike Hamlin.

With this defensive coaching staff I think Mays can flourish with proper coaching which I think we have. I wouldn't mind him being here.

ok I will put like this

Philly was hurt all accross the line last year

Pouncey can play what 2 pisotions

same with the Steelers

so why not take Pouncey - a 2 for 1 player

this is why Iupati ends up in a Dallas UNI

18 PITTSBURGH STEELERS: MAURKICE POUNCEY, C, FLORIDA

In recent years the Steelers have drafted with an eye toward the future but after a disappointing post-Super Bowl season in which they missed the playoffs that philosophy might have to change a bit. One area where Pittsburgh could use an upgrade is the offensive line because Ben Roethlisberger got hit way too much and their running game was rather pedestrian in 2009. It’s relatively rare to see a center selected in the first round but Florida’s Maurkice Pouncey has the talent to be an exception to that rule. A three-year starter for the Gators, Pouncey is a fantastic all-around blocker with the physical tools and intangibles to develop into one of the leagues top pivots. Idaho’s Mike Iupati could be an option as well and as a big, physical mauler he certainly fits the profile of what the Steelers look for in a blocker. Another intriguing possibility would be Clemson’s C.J. Spiller, who would replace Willie Parker as a compliment to Rashard Mendenhall on offense and also give their return units a boost. There are many who feel the Steelers could use an upgrade at cornerback but keep in mind that they just used third (Keenan Lewis) and fifth (Joe Burnett) round picks on cover guys last year. Don't rule out another curveball from Pittsburgh either.

Okay but I still disagree. Iupati has the potential to play tackle as well, and tackles are harder to plug in than guards. So Iupati is more valuable than Pouncey.

Congrats, you found one mock draft that has Pouncey going in the teens. Almost every other mock draft has him going in the late 20s-early 2nd round.

Yeah don't mean to interject, but I think the Steelers should draft a QB and drop Ben RuthlessRaper (just using the apparently official CZ name for him)..... SO we may not have to worry about them taking Iupati or Pouncey
