With Quinn returning, does anyone see Dean as Deion Jones

One of Dan Quinn's best picks in his Atlanta HC time was the selection of undersized linebacker Deion Jones from LSU. His frame is very similar to Nakobe Dean. Both are real fast, athletic, instinctive backers. He has a chance of falling to our pick due to his measurements, any interest?

I like Dean, but a lot more in the 2nd than the 1st. His size is concerning considering one of our biggest weaknesses is getting bullied by playoff caliber run teams.

If you told me he's going to be our starting MLB I wouldn't love it. If you told me Parsons is the starting MLB with Dean at WILL and then Dean and Cox are our nickel backers? I like it more.

As of now I like Lloyd better because I think he can be our Mike and free up Parsons to do Parsons things.

For me the linebacker position is very contingent on high level instincts. Can he see the play before he happens and beat a blocker to a spot. I think Dean has those traits, but certainly that size could be an issue, however, former Georgia LB R. Smith who had similar measurements has been a good player on this level.

Ro was 6’1 236 as a prospect…Dean is listed as 6’0 225 but we’ll see if the UGA program is being generous or not.

I agree about his instincts I just see him having a really hard time getting off blocks in the middle.

Would love Dean or Lloyd but rather have Kenyon Green LG in the 1st.

Think he would be more of a will in the base. Think with him, he is so quick to read and react it’s tough to get a hat on him.

LB is a need, but does Jerry see it as a 1st round need. I doubt it, The OL was a major disappointment. He’s already gone on record about his disappointment in Cooper. Will he pay top dollar to Gregory ? Realistically I think our 1st round pick could be an OL, WR, or DE. A lot of this will be depend on FA who stays and who goes. Do we add a major piece from the outside ?

And I’m cool with that.

I like Dean, it’s just hard for me to take LBr in round 1 unless they’re a special, special dude.

Parsons was easy and gave me zero concerns…Dean gives me some with size/length.

Linebacker is a hard position to evaluate. I think we had discussions about Bolton last yr and you were worried about his poor measurements and his timed speed, I was on the side that he possessed high level instincts where he could overcome some of those issues. Both of us were right to some degree.

The reason why I bring up Dean is that Quinn drafted and had success with a similar player in Deion Jones. 6'1 220, where Dean pre combine measurements are 6'0 225. Roquan Smith is listed as 6'0 230 and has had a good career thus far.

Are there concerns about his lack of size/length? Absolutely, but we are talking about drafting him late 1st rd and potentially could outplay his draft position.

It will obviously depend on the board but I could get down with Dean at 24 if he’s the clear cut BPA…dude is a playmaker.

Now in order for me to get on board he’s going to have to be a legit 6’0 225 and fly at the combine so we need the measurable / athleticism match the tape.

If he’s 5’10 / 215 and runs a 4.7 I’m out.

I agree, he cannot come in and have his measurements be less or it will greatly hurt his stock.

I’m not a fan of taking a LB in rd 1 at all in back to back years
Can’t imagine he will be BPA anyway

Bolton was too short last year and he's had a good rookie season. Dean is an excellent blitzer, and is also good in coverage. Towards the end of the season when Gallimore came back the LBs were getting blocked up less and running free. It would be nice to get another instinctive LB that sees it and goes.

Jones was a second round pick. Dean is probably better player overall but as good as Dean is we don’t need an off ball linebacker as much as we need a defensive lineman/pass rusher. Plus has Jones done anything after his big first two seasons.Under sized linebackers can be drafted in the second round. So no.

Bolton and JOK is why you don’t draft Dean in the first round. Dean-is a good player but his potential is limited because of his size. You can get a Bolton and JOK in the second round. They are just as good as Dean is.

Bolton fell due to his timed speed, where JOK fell due to his medicals. Both had good rookie years. We are talking about pick 24, not 10, if you think his is a legit playmaker you make the pick, as there have been many undersized players that have succeeded in this league.

Roquain Smith would tell you otherwise, as he has been a productive undersized 1st rd linebacker that came from the same university. This league has become less about size and strength, more about quickness and beating blockers to a spot.

I would rather draft a pass rusher or 1 tech. We don’t have the linemen that will protect Dean anyway. Yeah we could draft Taco but we could also get lucky and get Watts. Drafting a off ball linebacker is like drafting a running back, you can find them later. Plus we got Cox in the 4th round.
