With this Offense All We Need Is An Average Defense

And now that's exactly what we have:

Dallas Cowboys now rank 14th in overall defense, according to NFL.com

http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...OTAL_YARDS_GAME_AVG&d-447263-o=1&d-447263-n=1

Against the pass Dallas ranks 17th

Against the run, the Cowboys rank 12th.

We knew going into this season letting high priced veterans like Carr, Claiborne, Church and Wilcox leave might be felt as we coached a bunch of drafted rookies and 2nd year guys to replace them.

With the offense scoring the way it's been doing. all we need is an average, middle of the pack defense that holds other teams below the NFL scoring average.

Jacksonville leads the league right now allowing only 14.6 pts/game. Teams in the top 15 of the league in points surrendered vary between the Jaguar's 14.6 and the Dallas Cowboys 22.2.

When Dallas has gotten to play it's kind of game, with ball control offense, they have limited the other team to < 20 points in 5 games - and it's not a coincidence those are the 5 games the Cowboys have won thus far.

So a combination of an average NFL level defense getting help from a ball control offense that allows them plenty of rest & as a lead is built is a strategy that has won Dallas 18 regular season games thus far in the last 2 seasons.

Aside from the aberration that was the Denver game, Dallas struggles in shootouts when other teams force them out of the ball control game plan, as we saw in the back to back heart breaking losses to the Rams [35-30] and the Packers [35-31].

As the season progresses, the Dallas game plan for success is evident - and so is the game plan for stopping it.

Keep the Cowboys from running and force 3 and outs and get the defense tired. It will be up to the coaches in the remaining 8 games to find a way to keep the ball control offense going, and the defense playing at a slightly above average level.

I'm going to revisit this post in 4 weeks at the 12 game mark, then again at the end of the regular season to see if the defense can improve on these current rankings.

The defense is definitely playing well but defense matters most in playoffs. They will need to make critical stops.

We can't have a situation like in the playoffs in GB last year, where the offense has to be perfect not to fall multiple scores behind. Defense has to get stops the majority of opponents' possessions.

This defense is short of a little better DB play (which still could come this season with more experience by the young guys) from being a top 10 defense.

Points per drive is the best stat for determining how good the defense is. We are currently ranked 23rd. It was in the high twenties few weeks ago. We are getting better but we are still not an average defense yet. Couple more games like yesterday and we will get there.

Cowboys are 24th in points per play allowed by the defense. That's below average. I also disagree with the notion that "average" defense is good enough. It may get you in the playoffs, but you're not winning a title with "average" defense regardless of your offense.

Right now the way this season has gone, just making the playoffs would be a huge thing.

This team is obviously not ready to win a title. Still 1-2 drafts away.

Cowboys are 28th in opponent 3rd down conversions and 31st in forcing opponents to punt. The defense isn't good, and really hasn't been good for years. Last year the Cowboys were able to hide it somewhat, but when it came to playoff time it got exposed because you don't get to play against bad offenses in January.

Play any QB you want and it won't change. We had one of the better QBs in the league for a decade and never sniffed a title because of average (or worse) defense.

This is exactly the thinking from our FO which has prevented us to field a decent defense since Wade Phillips was fired. A mediocre GM gets you mediocre players which lead to mediocre results.
