This is a post on an Orioles Forum:
3:35 Texas at Oakland (Dempster vs Griffin)
7:05 Baltimore at Tampa (Tillman vs Hellickson)
7:05 Boston at New York (Matsuzaka vs Kuroda)
What We Know
-- Tigers are Central Division Champs and Division Seed #3
-- Winner of tomorrow's Tex/Oak game is AL West Champ at 94-68; loser is
a wild card at 93-69
-- Baltimore and New York are also both in the playoffs
We win Tomorrow
-- If the Yankees win, Yankees are AL East Champ at 94-68
...............if Texas wins, Yankees are Division Seed #1, and Rangers are Division Seed #2. Wild Card Game Friday is Oakland at Baltimore. Winner of Wild Card game begins Division Series at home Sunday and Monday vs Yankees. Other Division Series begins Saturday and Sunday with A's at Tigers.
.............if Oakland wins, A's are Division Seed #1 and Yankees are DIvision Seed #2. Wild Card Game Friday is Texas at Baltimore. Winner of Wild Card game begins Division Series at home Sunday and Monday at home vs A's. Other Division Series begins Saturday and Sunday with Yankees at Tigers.
-- If the Yankees lose, Orioles and Yankees tie for AL East at 94-68. A one game tiebreaker is played Thursday: New York at Baltimore.
.............if Yankees win Tiebreaker game, Yankees are AL East Champ. All of the above under "Yankees are AL East Champ" in blue is still true.
.............if Orioles win Tiebreaker game, Orioles are AL East Champ. Orioles are #2 Division Seed and begin Division Series Saturday and Sunday at Detroit. Yankees play wild card game vs AL West runnerup (loser of tomorrow's Tex/Oak game). Yankees are the home team. Winner of that series begins Division Series Sunday and Monday at home vs AL West Champion.
We Lose Tomorrow
-- Yankees are AL East Champ. If Yankees win and Texas beat Oakland, Yankees are #1 Division Seed and Rangers are #2 Division seed. Otherwise, Oak/Tex winner is #1 Division Seed and Yankees are #2 Division seed.
-- Orioles are #2 wild card. We would play a wildcard game Friday at the home of the loser of Wednesday's Oakland/Texas Game. If we won that, we would begin a Division Series Sunday and Monday at home vs the #1 Division Seed (see one paragraph above to see who this is). The Tigers would begin a Division Series Saturday and Sunday vs the #2 Division Seed.
This can't be right. Right now, today, the Yankees have 1 game on everybody in the AL. If they win, they win both AL East and Best Record regardless of what the A's or Texas does. If the Yankees lose, then they are tied with the winner of Texas/Oakland and the O's.
The tie breaker would be as follows:
1 The team with the best record in head to head play.
2 The team with the best overall record in intradivision games.
3 The team with the best record in the final 81 games of the season, ignoring interleague play.
4 The team with the best record in the final 82 games of the season (providing the game added is not between the tied teams), extending backward until the tie is broken (since teams in the same division play each other as many as 19 times, this step is guaranteed to break the tie. Interleague games are skipped and ignored in this process.)
If this is the case and the Yankees were to end up in a tie with the Winner of the West and the O's, then the one game playoff with the O's would decided the Eastern Division. Now, if Texas beat the A's tonight, then the Rangers would win the West.
If Texas won the West:
-If the O's beat the Yankees in a one game divisional decider, then Texas would be the #1 seed and the O's would be the #2 because Texas has a better record against the O's in head to head, which is the first tie breaker.
-If the Yankees beat the O's in a one game divisional decider, then the Yankees would be the #1 and the Rangers would be #2 because the Yankees own the head to head with Texas.
If the A's beat the Rangers tonight then the A's would win the West.
If the A's won the West:
-In this circumstance, if the O's beat the Yankees in a one game divisional decider, then the Rangers would be the #1 seed and the O's would be the #2 as the Rangers own the head to head against the O's, which is the first tie breaker.
-If the Yankees beat the O's in a one game divisional decider, then the Yankees would be the #1 seed and the A's would be the #2 seed. The Yankees split with the A's head to head 5 to 5 but the Yankees own the better Intra Divisional record, 40-31 (Yanks) to 32-24 (A's), which is the second tie breaker.
