OK..so who would you rather have on your team? Witten or Shockey? Shockey is the bigger playmaker with more yards after catch and touchdowns, but he is also the bigger headcase. Let's have it, boys? Who gets your vote?

Shockey is not as good of a tight end as Witten, period. They both struggle blocking but Shockey, to date, has not yet had a season like the one Witten had in his second year, not even close. Until further notice Witten is the better tight end with attitude, approach aside.

I wouldnt want Shockey on my team regardless, but when we have Jason Witten the question is a no brainer...Shockey typicially drops more passes on any given sunday than Witten does in an entire season...Shockey's never had as good a yr as Witten had last yr

Both are talented. When talent is virtually equal you go with the better character. Shockey is a character. Witten has character.

Jason Witten.

They will. They aren't stupid and letting him go would be stupid.

Witten has superb hands. If he can touch the ball he will catch it. He knows how to get open in traffic and move the chains. Shockey is more of a big WR with average hands. I'll take Witten.

About a year ago there was a longish thread on this board that ended abruptly, and perhaps appropriately, when a very respected member and excellent football analyst wrote something to the effect that we could be Witten fans all we like, but that we all knew darn well if we could make a straight up trade, we'd take Shockey. In a heartbeat. (Paraphase.)

That is not true today. Some still would take Shockey, as he is the rarer talent. A combination of agility and strength, with deceptive speed rarely found in a te. And with an aggressive hunger to win as well.

But many of us I think would take Jason now, and some of us did last year. Soft hands, polished routes, improving blocking, extremely high coachability, and great football instincts, not to mention the personal character and commitment to team make JW less "wow!", but a better bet for long term productivity.

The final chapter of this one won't be written for a decade, or more - if the HOF is in either's/both's future.

But I put my money on JW last season, and will keep it there.

Shockey makes big plays but he drops a lot of balls. For me, a TE's job is more the traditional role of catching the ball over the middle, keeping the safeties honest and moving the chains. Shockey is more of a WR than a TE IMHO, and the Gints use him as a wideout a lot. Having said all that...I'd take Shockey any day, but not to replace Witten. I'd use him in the slot and wideout instead of a TE.

Let's see:
Hands: Witten by a mile
Route Running: I'll say Witten because one couldn't be better, but Shockey may be close
Blocking:Even - both are adequate
Run after catch: Shockey
Character: Witten by a mile (at least)

Answer: Witten

I will ALWAYS take a guy with good character over a player with questionable character even if the latter has more talent.

I think Shockey COULD BE one of the best TEs ever if he had his head on striaght but he doesn't so he isn't. He drops too many passes, is not a consistent blocker, gets hurt a lot, and just seems to be lost at times. On the other hand he can dominate games at times and looks as if he can make any play anytime he wants to. That's the question though, when does he want to and why doesn't he want to all the time?

Witten doesn't have the playmaking ability that Shockey possesses but he has excellent hands, is a willing, though not outstanding, blocker, is very dependable, particularly on 3rd downs, and has a great attitude.

I would take Witten every time over Shockey without a second's hesitation.

I just re-read the thread started December 29th on this subject. I didn't see this. Was it another thread?

There was an interview with Carl Banks last week before or during the Giants game. I think he was online live answering questions during the game or something. Someone asked him and his answer was basically what a lot of us have said - Shockey is a better pure talent, Witten is a better TE. I believe he said Witten was a more complete TE.

Shockey is being used as a big WR this year, and he's doing well. It's what he's good at, and plays to his strengths. Being a giant WR is not a bad thing, but Parcells wants a TE.

Also, Witten catches 83% of the balls thrown his way, Shockey catches 58%. In our offense we need someone who's dependable to move the chains. You won't find much more dependable than 83%.

It had to be way earlier than that.

I will try to find it later.

Between Witten and Shockey. It is pretty close. However I feel that Witten has MUCH better hands and therefore is more of a consistent threat.

In any given game you have no idea which Shockey you are going to get. Sometimes hands of stone, sometimes Mark Bavaro.

Witten easily.

Witten is better than Shockey, talent Shockey has a slim advantage, but as far as on the field Witten takes it. He is willing to do evrything for his team. Shockery just wants his name in the scorebox.

Witten everyday.
