He moved into fourth all-time in catches by a tight end earlier this season and won't pass Ozzie Newsome for third until next season.
ALL-TIME CATCHES BY A TIGHT END
1. Tony Gonzalez 1044
2. Shannon Sharpe 815
3. Ozzie Newsome 662
4. Jason Witten 583
5. Kellen Winslow Sr. 541
6. Antonio Gates 519
7. Frank Wycheck 505
8. Jeremy Shockey 500
He's seventh all-time in yards by a tight end. He should move into sixth in the next couple of games and might overtake Gates for fifth this season if Gates' injury problems continue.
ALL-TIME YARDS BY A TIGHT END
1. Tony Gonzalez 12,255
2. Shannon Sharpe 10,060
3. Ozzie Newsome 7,980
4. Jackie Smith 7,918
5. Antonio Gates 6,886
6. Kellen Winslow Sr. 6,741
7. Jason Witten 6,625
For Witten's age, though, the only guy who was even close in catches or yards was Tony Gonzalez. Witten's already No. 1 in catches by age 28 with five more games left in his season, and he's on pace to be No. 1 for yards by the end of the season, too.
Here are the top tight ends in catches and yards through their season at age 28 --
CATCHES THROUGH AGE 28
1. Jason Witten 583 (five games remaining)
2. Tony Gonzalez 570
3. Ozzie Newsome 440
4. Kellen Winslow Sr. 424
5. Jeremy Shockey 421
6. Antonio Gates 400
YARDS THROUGH AGE 28
1. Tony Gonzalez 6,905
2. Jason Witten 6,625 (five games remaining)
3. Ozzie Newsome 5,570
4. Kellen Winslow Sr. 5,494
5. Antonio Gates 5,066
The only players -- at any position -- who have had more catches by age 28 are Randy Moss (634) and Andre Johnson (587), and Witten (583) should pass Johnson in the next game or two to move into second place all-time. Of course, Larry Fitzgerald (578) is right behind Witten and is only 27, so he should end up passing Witten and Moss by the end of next season (unless there isn't a season, I suppose).
