Jason Witten is amazing in so many ways.
Of all his staggering numbers numbers, two have always stood out, the consecutive games played and the consecutive games with a catch. They go hand in hand to a degree, and they are the Cal Ripken statistics of the tight end position. It's virtually Herculean considering the demands of the position for a blocking/receiving style of tight end. Just look at what Rob Gronkowski has gone through.
Sadly, one came to an end last night. Witten didn't record a catch for the first time in 130 games, which dates back eight seasons to 2008. His 160 consecutive starts is still intact.
Jason Witten has still only missed one game in his 14-year career. Stupifying. And that was after a broken jaw! Martellus Bennett would have missed two months with that. Witten played the next week after rupturing his spleen. He played last year with two sprained ankles, including both a low and high sprain on the same ankle (he missed one practice that week).
Prescott did complete one pass to Witten over the middle, but it was negated by a holding call by Zeke Elliott. The stingy Vikings defense held Dalllas' passing game to a mere 12 completions on the night.
It was both fitting and unusual that the streak end in an ugly win. Witten thrives in the mucked-up, scrappy games that are won with dirty yards in tight spaces.
Sure, 10 pro bowls in 14 years speak to Witten's ability. But that doesn't come close to describing the unique player he is. There's really never been anyone like him here.
His contract is up in 2017. I'll bet you he starts and catches a pass in every game the rest of the way.
