I was in my early 30's and single when I moved to California from Texas. I went to a bar the first week I was here and started talking to a pretty girl. I don't remember how long we were talking but she literally asked me what kind of car I was driving. I thought she was kidding but she wasn't. I didn't realize that was really a thing.

I was lucky enough to meet my future wife here a year later. I proposed to her without a ring and she literally said to get her a cheap ring and spend the money on a hot tub we can both enjoy. I did that and it was awesome. I did get her a nice ring a few years later and it seemed more special to her.

I'm sure that for a good woman, getting her a nicer ring when it wasn't expected was much more meaningful than buying an expensive one on the "2 months' salary" rule.
