OK, here is my first mock leading up to the Draft in May.

(1) I am using nfldraftscout.com rankings, though I don't necessarily agree with many of the rankings. That said, I wanted to keep it as "pure" as possible. So, I am assuming that I can only draft a player at or after our draft pick in that round according to nfldraftscout's rankings.

(2) I am not assuming any trades in this mock.

(3) I am assuming that Donald, Barr and Evans are already gone to make it more interesting. Otherwise I would choose Donald.

(4) The only other assumption I am making is that we will pick up a cheap veteran Safety and a veteran OG sometime in FA for depth/competition purposes.

Round 1
Pick 16
C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama
He missed time in 2011 with a dislocated elbow, but I am assuming he is now healthy (including the knees).

Round 2
Pick 47
K Martin, DE, North Carolina
He has the natural frame and size. Also, he was productive last season. Martin still has tremendous upside.

Round 3
Pick 78
B Turner, OG/OT, North Dakota State
He will probably have to move inside to OG Year 1. But he has the potential to start at some point in the next 1-2 years.

Round 4
Pick 119
C Reid, DT, Princeton
I think he can play the 1 or 3 tech for the Cowboys. He can be part of a rotation early on.

Round 5
Pick 158
K Norwood, WR, Alabama
He's got very good height (around 6' 3") and size. I think he's a bit underrated.

Round 7
Pick 229
John Brown, WR, Pittsburg State
Lots and lots of speed and return skills.

Pick 231
De'Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
See John Brown. I think Linehan can use both Brown and Thomas to create mis-matches.

Pick 238
Trey Millard, FB, Oklahoma
It's time we upgraded to a real FB.

Pick 248
Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford
O.K., I think he goes higher than this, but I'm using nfldraftscout's rankings. I think he can play both some SDE and 3-tech in passing downs.

Pick 251
Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh
I'm not sure he beats out Weeden. But maybe Weeden beats out Orton and Savage is the developmental guy? From a risk-reward standpoint, I think it makes sense to draft Savage here. Worst case, maybe we can stash him on our PS for 1 year.

Pick 254
Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsbury
There's going to be a lot of competition on the DL this off-season! Again, L Webster may be another guy we stash on our PS and let him develop for a year.

I like pretty much all of the guys you have there, good job. Realistic too. I too am not crazy about DeAnthony Thomas and think you could secure Gardner (he won't be there in the 7th as you said) by trading 229 and 231 to get into the high 6th. I know you said no trades but I'd say that is a pretty realistic and safe move to predict.

I'll be bummed out if we took Mosley 16th. Just don't see it. Does he make the defense better? Sure, so does Jeremy Mincey. Just not an impact player and with this draft's depth, we should be able to land one at 16. Picks 2 through 4 are all solid, decent players but no one strikes me as obvious roster upgrades.

I like what you did in the 7th round. Speed for the return game, size on the D Line, big QB with solid tools to groom, and a much-needed Fullback.

Nice board with the limitations of not having Donald/Barr and no trades we could do so much worse. Love Millard from OU he will finally take some heat off Witten, as the H back he is similar to Sean Lee in his football awareness and versatile like Johnson was back in the nineties. IMO

All quality players. I especially like rounds 3, 4 and 5.

I'm not a big fan of drafting a 4-3 LB that early and Mosley does have multiple injury issues. I would try hard to trade down in that scenario. If Evans, Donald and Barr are all gone, then I still think at least 1 player (maybe a QB) would be there that somebody would trade up to get.

X,
A QB may be there. Maybe Carr? There could be a trade down opportunity then. But I think the guys who will be there include Z Martin and Jernigan, neither of whom I'm keen on at 16 (at the moment). I guess a Safety could be there too. But I don't know if either of the top two candidates is truly worthy of 16. If there isn't a trade down, and the guys we've discussed are gone, it could make for an interesting decision.
